2M cuts AE1/Shogun loop as MSC receives more mega vessels

The 2M alliance has suspended one of its six Asia-Europe services, the AE1/Shogun loop, as MSC takes deliveries of five 24,000 TEU ships, according to Alphaliner’s latest report.

The Shogun loop is the first Asia-Europe service that a major shipping alliance has stopped since cargo volumes began plunging in September 2022.

This suspension will have no immediate impact on the trade, since all of the Shogun loop’s sailings from China had already been successively cancelled since early December 2022.

2M split highlighted with Maersk idling more ships

Maersk Line continues to lose ground to MSC with the highest number of ships idled at the moment while MSC is still taking on fresh charters and second-hand acquisitions, as the Swiss-Italian carrier continues to launch new services.

Linerlytica’s report this week stated that there are now 131 idle ships, and Maersk Line has the largest number of ships idle, with 32 unemployed vessels, compared with nine for market leader MSC.

Otherwise, despite the correction in the freight market, more ships...

Container trade’s next turn: Price wars, cheap contracts, new ships

What does the future hold for container shipping alliances and price competition among ocean carriers? How low will spot and long-term freight rates go in the Asia-U.S. trade? And what happens when a massive wave of new container vessels starts hitting the water in the months ahead?

These are just some of the issues addressed by Vespucci Maritime CEO Lars Jensen and Xeneta CEO Patrik Berglund during FreightWaves’ Global Supply Chain Week (GSCW) virtual forum on Tuesday.

The future of alliances

2M alliance announces rotation changes in Transpacific services

The largest container shipping alliance, the 2M alliance (Maersk and MSC), has decided to proceed with several changes in two Transpacific services.

2M alliance break-up reshuffles deck for Transpacific market

The upcoming break-up of the 2M alliance is going to lead to a change in the competitive makeup of the deep-sea networks, according to Sea-Intelligence.

More specifically, although the formal break-up will not happen until January 2025, gradual changes are likely to happen during the two-year transition period.

In the hypothetical case that the other two alliances remain intact, and that the orderbook gets delivered on time, the changes in the capacity market share with a ‘pure’ break-up of 2M on...
