HHI receives world’s first ‘Cyber Security Ready’ certificate for VLCC

South Korean shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., the world’s largest shipbuilding company, announced that it has received a cyber security certificate from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for one of its very large crude carriers (VLCCs). This was the first time in the world that the company received the Cyber Security Ready (CSR) for a VLCC.

ABS Joins Forces Introducing Space Technology To LNG Shipping

ABS

ABS, OceanFinance and Scorpius Space Launch Company (SSLC) are joining forces on the SPACE TECH4SEA project to adapt composite technologies developed for the space industry to LNG shipping. The project, attracting more than €1m grant funding from the European Commission, aims to apply composite technology, which is lighter and more cost-effective, as a competitive alternative in LNG as marine fuel designs, principally for short sea shipping.

ABS granted Approval in Principle (AIP) to the Marine Design & Research Institute of China (MARIC) for a novel Dual Fuel Design for a 210,000 DWT Bulk Carrier.

MARIC, a subsidiary company of China State Shipbuilding Corporation group, is developing a 294m Newcastlemax bulker with an LNG fuel system consisting of a bilobe type C tank with about 6000 cubic meter capacity, located on the aft deck.

Weeks Marine gets first New York Coast Guard COIs

The Coast Guard’s New York sector presented its first Subchapter M certificates of inspection to Weeks Marine, Inc. (WMI), Cranford, N.J., for achieving full compliance with the regulations on a pair of its tugboats.

The 77.1’x26’x10.6’, 2,000-hp Elizabeth and the 99.1’x32’x14’, 3,000-hp Katherine are the first to go through the COI process with the sector’s New York Waterways Branch.

US EPA delays introduction of VGP 3.0 until March 2019

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has further delayed the release of its new Vessel General Permit (VGP 3.0), which was originally scheduled to be issued for comment in late 2017, but is now expected to be made available in March 2019 – with at least a 30-day comment period, according to a regulatory update by ABS.

During the extended delay period, the EPA is administratively continuing the current VGP (VGP 2.0), until VGP 3.0 enters into force. Namely:
