Air Canada says freight demand beginning to improve

Air Canada expects the slow recovery in cargo volume that began in the fourth quarter to quicken in 2024, aided by the addition of two more freighter aircraft, but doesn’t anticipate gains in pricing power, Mark Galardo, executive vice president for network planning and revenue management, said Friday.

The 2-year-old cargo airline within Air Canada (TSX: AC) currently operates five converted and two factory-built Boeing 767-300 freighters. It is scheduled this year to receive two cargo jets...

Air Canada reaffirms cargo commitment after 777 freighter cancellation

Air Canada remains committed to growing its startup freighter division despite canceling an order with Boeing last month for two 777 freighters, said CEO Michael Rousseau on Monday.

Air Canada (TO: AC) reported a 24% drop in third-quarter cargo revenue compared to the same period last year, to $155.5 million (CA$215 million), due to lower yields caused by weak market conditions. The air cargo industry writ large is coping with an 18-month contraction from pandemic peaks, exacerbated by excess...

New Air Canada freighters help offset declines in cargo revenue

Air Canada on Friday reported a 24% decline in second-quarter cargo revenue, a performance better than most international peers that was aided by the deployment of four additional Boeing 767-300 freighters during the past year.

Canada’s largest passenger airline launched its own cargo airline in early 2022 and now has six cargo jets in the fleet. Two were directly purchased from the Boeing factory and four are former passenger jets converted by a specialty engineering firm to transport shipping...

WestJet averts pilots strike, agrees to new contract

WestJet, the second-largest passenger airline in Canada that recently added freighter service in North America, and the union representing 1,850 pilots reached a last-minute agreement in principle Thursday night on a new labor contract, avoiding a strike that would have shut down business.

The tentative agreement between management and the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) must still be presented to union membership for a ratification vote. The pilots were ready to walk off the job Friday...

Air Canada’s freighter investments weigh on cash flow

Air Canada executives said it will take a couple more years for the full revenue potential of the incoming freighter fleet to take effect while the cargo market goes through a slump.

Air Canada’s cargo revenue fell 41% in the fourth quarter to CA$288 million ($214 million) from 2021, reflecting overall market weakness related to inflation, an economic slowdown and high retail inventories that afflicted most airlines. For the full year, cargo sales declined 15% to $935 million.

The results were...

Air Canada prepares Vancouver hub for 2024 arrival of 777 freighters

MIAMI — Air Canada’s first freighter aircraft are the most visible manifestation of an aggressive push to grow cargo business, but the airline is also building up airport infrastructure to support higher volumes and more profitable specialty products.

Without efficient ground handling capabilities the extra cargo jets won’t deliver the expected service and revenue.

Air Canada is preparing to expand its Vancouver, British Columbia, cargo terminal in preparation for receiving two 777 factory-built...

Back in the saddle: Air Canada relaunches equine service

MIAMI — Air Canada is in the horse transportation business again. It’s a move made possible by the introduction nearly a year ago of widebody freighters to the passenger fleet.

Air Canada Cargo announced last month the start of an equine transportation service using specially designed stalls that can carry up to three animals. The new service builds on a legacy of experience gained during an earlier era when the airline operated all-cargo aircraft and from processing horses for other airlines at...

Air Canada Cargo adds Boeing freighter, expands to more US markets

The addition of a third cargo jet will enable Air Canada to expand freighter service to the United States and Latin America.

Air Canada’s cargo division announced Thursday that Dallas and Atlanta, plus Bogota, Colombia, will be added to the fledgling freighter network in November. The new routes from the Toronto hub are timed with the arrival of the airline’s third converted Boeing 767-300 freighter,  a spokesperson said.

The Canadian flag carrier will operate three flights per week to each city....
