Almost all of us have seen television images of a President of the United States board Air Force One or Marine One at some point in time.

What many may not know is that “Air Force One” is the official air traffic control call sign of any U.S. Air Force (USAF) aircraft that has the President of the United States on-board. The presidential air fleet now includes multiple aircraft, so the call sign is moved from airplane to airplane as necessary.

The first transcontinental commercial jet flight in the United States occurred on January 25, 1959, inaugurating the jet age for passenger and cargo aircraft.

At 12:01 p.m. an American Airlines Boeing 707 departed Los Angeles International Airport on its way to New York City. To mark the occasion, Bernice Brown, the wife of California Governor Edmund G.  Brown, pressed the buttons to start the airplane’s jet engines.

Boeing supplier files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy

GDC Technics, an aeronautics interiors supplier, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy the same day the company announced it was laying off 223 people in Texas.

The layoffs and bankruptcy filing come after Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA) sued GDC Technics for allegedly being behind schedule on two Air Force One aircraft.

The bankruptcy filing in the Western District of Texas did not include detailed financial information about GDC Technics. The company listed liabilities from $10 million to $50 million and more...

Air Force One supplier laying off 223 after losing Boeing contract

GDC Technics is cutting 223 jobs in San Antonio and Fort Worth, Texas, after the Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA) recently sued the company for being behind schedule on two Air Force One aircraft.

Brad Forman, CEO of GDC Technics, said the company is permanently closing its San Antonio plant where most of the work on Air Force One was done.
