Risky business: How shipping boom, war and COVID impact safety at sea

shipping accidents safety

A ship full of Porsches, Bentleys and Lamborghinis catches fire and sinks in the Atlantic. A container vessel ignites and goes down off Sri Lanka. In a sequel to the Even Given accident in the Suez Canal, another Evergreen ship runs aground, this time in Chesapeake Bay. More containers full of goods topple off ships and vanish into the Pacific. Ships stuck in the queue off Southern California drag anchor in a storm and allegedly damage an oil pipeline.

It’s dangerous out there on the high seas.

A mustard-colored jet with red DHL lettering on the tarmac.

COVID-19 has faded in importance for much of the nation. That also seems to go for a good-sized number of U.S.-based small to midsize businesses.

A survey of more than 4,000 of those businesses, commonly known by the acronym SMB, found that only 12% consider the pandemic to be their biggest business challenge for the rest of 2022. That was compared with 29% polled at the same time in 2021.

About 61% of respondents in the current survey said that supply chain delays would be their biggest...

The average price of gasoline in the U.S. hit yet another record high on Monday, at $4.596 per gallon, according to AAA. With the summer driving season just days away, starting Memorial Day weekend, prices at the pump are expected to go even higher. How high could depend on how much gasoline is shipped into the East Coast aboard tankers.

“U.S. driving season is looming large,” said tanker brokerage BRS in a report published Monday. “U.S. Atlantic Coast gasoline inventories currently stand at 51...
