Some recent rains in the basins that ultimately dump water into the Mississippi are a start, but the barge shipping problems that have created enormous backups on the river, particularly near Memphis, Tennessee, remain a long way from resolution.

Harland & Wolff may be best known as the builder of the ill-fated transatlantic liner RMS Titanic, but these days its sights are set on somewhat different markets. Kirby agrees to pay $15.3 million damages in oil spill case

In a case relating to a 2014 incident, Houston-based Kirby Inland Marine LP has agreed to pay $15.3 million in damages and assessment costs under the Oil Pollution Act. Doing so resolves federal and state claims for injuries to natural resources resulting from an oil spill from a Kirby barge after a collision Kirby caused, says the U.S. Department of Justice.

Bouchard Transportation seeks buyer to avoid 108 layoffs

Bouchard Transportation Co., an independently owned barge and tugboat company, is seeking a buyer to avert closing its facility in Melville, New York. 

According to a notice filed with the New York Department of Labor Thursday, the company is “currently in the process of seeking a purchaser of Bouchard or its assets which may also elect to continue the employment of all or a substantial number of employees.”
