Maersk vessel omits Auckland due to weather conditions

Maersk announced that due to adverse weather conditions which are expected to delay Polaris service vessel Nicolai Maersk en route to Melbourne, the vessel will omit the port of Auckland.

The Danish carrier said it took this decision to minimise any further Polaris schedule disruption and to allow for schedule recovery.

The contingency plan for affected cargo will be as follows:

Exports currently booked for Nicolai Maersk 327E and loading/transshipping at Melbourne for Auckland will load Maersk...

Deployed capacity drops sharply in CNY 2023

Five weeks ago, Sea-Intelligence analysed the scheduled East/West capacity for the four-week 2023 Chinese New Year (CNY) period.

The results have shown that the 2023 CNY capacity is going to be higher than in past years, despite the slowdown in demand.

Sea-Intelligence’s analysts noted that carriers will be able to bring capacity back in line with the historical levels.

Mainline operators cut 27% of Europe and Mediterranean sailings

The first seven weeks of 2023 have seen 27% of Asia-Europe sailings axed as carriers respond to collapsed demand, according to Alphaliner’s report.

Alphaliner’s calculations state that normally, from 1 January to 17 February, there would be 196 sailings from the carriers’ 18 Far East-North Europe and 10 Far East-Mediterranean services.

However, the carriers’ most recent forward schedules for the upcoming weeks suggest that 53 of these planned voyages have been removed due to insufficient volumes.

Sea-Intelligence sees deployed capacity remain high during CNY 2023

Chinese New Year (CNY) sees a production slowdown in Asia while the major shipping lines announce blank sailings in order to bring supply in line with demand.

According to Sea-Intelligence, in 2020, the CNY extended due to the Covid outbreak, while in both 2021 and 2022 the shipping lines kept capacity high in order to cater to the high demand levels.

Moreover, given that demand growth has now stagnated, and freight rates are continuing to drop, it would make sense for the shipping lines to blank...

Rates Hike As Carriers Begin To Benefit From Blank Voyages

Credit: Andy Li/Unsplash
  • “However, for weeks 51 and 52, carriers have scheduled no blank sailings on Asia-North America west coast, which is a reflection of carrier indecision on how to approach the potential pre-Chinese New Year rush.”
  • “It appears more to be a wait-and-see approach, in terms of whether there will be a seasonal demand spike,” he added.
  • Asia-US east coast prices on Freightos FBX climbed 2% week on week, to $5,767 per 40ft, which is 64% lower than rates for this week last year.
