Covid-19 came down suddenly and hard on passenger vessels, which had been one of the very bright spots in the workboat market. Government shutdowns idling thousands of employees and vessels were followed by a barrage of new safety rules at every level.

Some operators lost the entire 2020 season. Others like ferries had to keep running, learning and adapting as they sailed with fewer riders. Some reopened when they could to a trickle of customers. Others may never reopen.

Blount Boats delivers tug to New York Power Company

On Friday, Aug. 28, the new tug Breaker II completed its delivery voyage to the Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant, operated by the New York Power Authority, the nation’s largest state power organization.

The 56’x18’5″x6’9″, twin-screw tug with a 4’6″ draft, was designed by Bristol Harbor Group, Bristol, R.I. and was constructed at the Blount Boats facility, Warren, R.I.

Blount Boats delivers icebreaking tug

Warren, R.I., shipbuilder Blount Boats reports that, on Friday, August 28, the 56-foot, twin-screw tug Breaker II completed its delivery voyage to the Robert Moses Niagara Power Plant, operated by New York Power Authority.

The 56 foot by 18.5 foot shallow draft tug was designed by the Bristol Harbor Group of Bristol, R.I., and has a reinforced hull for breaking ice efficiently. It will operate in seasonal ice near the entrance to and within the upper Niagara River.

Blount to sell its small cruise ship fleet

Blount Boats is selling its three small overnight cruise ships and putting all its emphasis on the family shipbuilding business, citing the coronavirus pandemic.

“It was really just the requirement that all the cruise lines had to shut down for Covid, and at this point we decided not to start again,” said Marcia Blount, president and CFO of the Warren, R.I., company. “What we really decided was to focus on building.”

Blount Boats awarded $9 million contract to build new icebreaker for Maryland

Blount Boats Inc., Warren, R.I., has been awarded a $9.1 million contract to build a 90’x26’x10’ icebreaker/buoy tender for the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

The vessel will be designed by BMT Designers & Planners Inc., Arlington, Va. The new vessel will have a steel hull and an aluminum deckhouse. Cummins will supply the main engines and the vessel will be outfitted with a Melcal deck crane.
