BOEM takes a step forward on Guam offshore wind

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has published a Call for Information and Nominations (Call) for possible wind energy leasing off the coast of the U.S. Pacific Territory of Guam.

The Call will gather public comments to inform potential leasing areas, and results from close collaboration with the Government of Guam, which aims to generate 50% of its electricity from renewable energy sources by 2035 and 100% by 2045.

“Responsible offshore wind development off Guam’s coast offers a vital...

BOEM reports competitive interest in two U.S. Gulf Wind Energy Areas

While a lackluster response to the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management’s first Gulf of Mexico offshore wind lease sale was largely attributed to the challenges of floating offshore wind, there are some U.S. Gulf Wind Energy Areas where fixed foundation wind turbines might be feasible.

That would appear to include Wind Energy Area (WEA) options C and D off the coast of southeast Texas.

Though not included in the sale that flopped they had been previously identified by the Bureau of Ocean Energy...

BOEM announces next steps for Gulf oil and gas leasing program

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has announced the availability of the Gulf of Mexico (GOM) Regional Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) Oil and Gas Lease Sales Draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement (EIS).

API slams BOEM’s 5-year oil and gas lease sale program

In December 2023, the Department of the Interior published the 2024-2029 National Outer Continental Shelf Oil and Gas Leasing Program, which includes only three oil and gas lease sales in the GOM over the next five years.

BOEM gives Maryland Offshore Wind the go ahead

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) yesterday announced its approval of the Construction and Operations Plan for US Wind’s Maryland Offshore Wind project. This is the final approval needed for the project from BOEM following the Department of the Interior’s September 2024 Record of Decision. This significant milestone advances the Biden administration’s goal of deploying 30 gigawatts of offshore wind energy capacity by 2030.

SouthCoast Wind on track for final approval

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has announced the availability of the final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the proposed SouthCoast Wind project. The lease area covers approximately 127,388 acres and is about 26 nautical miles south of Martha’s Vineyard and 20 nautical miles south of Nantucket, Mass. If approved, the project could generate up to 2.4 GW of offshore wind energy.

Two winning bids in Gulf of Maine floating wind lease sale

Today, BOEM completed its sixth offshore wind lease sale by offering areas in the Gulf of Maine – the first commercial sale for floating offshore wind on the U.S. Atlantic Coast. The floating wind lease sale resulted in two provisional winners on four lease areas and over $21.9 million in winning bids.

Avangrid Renewables, LLC won Lease OCS-564 at $4,928,250, which consists of 98,565 acres and Lease OCS-568 at $6,244,850, which consists of 124,897 acres. Both lease areas are approximately 29.5...

BOEM postpones Oregon offshore wind energy auction

The Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) has announced that it is delaying the offshore wind energy auction planned for potential lease areas offshore Oregon due to insufficient bidder interest at this time.

Oregon is one of the states that has been studying the potential for floating offshore wind and there had been hopes that the lease sale would move development of this technology forward. Still, as we saw in this year’s U.S. GoM wind sale, the challenges it poses are making potential...

Date set for first Gulf of Maine offshore wind lease sale

In what could mark a major milestone for the development of U.S. floating wind technology, the U.S. Department of the Interior has announced that it will hold an offshore wind energy lease sale on Oct. 29, 2024, for eight areas on the Outer Continental Shelf off Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Maine. If fully developed, says the department, these Gulf of Maine areas have a potential capacity of approximately 13 gigawatts of offshore wind energy, which could power more than 4.5 million homes.
