Canadian ports eye strains to the supply chain network ahead of rail stoppage

North American shippers and Canadian ports are bracing for the effects of an anticipated freight rail work stoppage just after midnight on Thursday, 22 August.

At this time, the major Canadian freight railways, Canadian National (CN) and Canadian Pacific (CPKC) will lock out members of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference, who have indicated intentions to go on strike rather than agree to binding arbitration over a new labor agreement. The old one expired on Dec. 31, 2023.

Port of Saint John on a roll, thanks to potash and beefed-up rail services

Potash has been a tremendous fuel for growth at the Canadian port of Saint John; the New Brunswick port clocked up 11% higher tonnage last year than in 2020.
But its dry bulk traffic was on fire, surging a whopping 123%, with potash the main driver for this, more than doubling, from 619,203 tonnes in 2020 to 1,653,750 tonnes.

Waterborne Canadian imports from Asia remain under pressure. Traffic links between the port of Vancouver and the Canadian interior are gradually being restored after they were severed by severe flooding, but the situation remains tenuous and a full recovery of cargo flows is still a long way off.
It could get even worse if container truckers serving the port were to move ahead with a threat of industrial action.
Work is progressing …

A train service between Vancouver and the Canadian interior is set to resume by midday Pacific time today, according to CP Rail.
The Class I rail company announced yesterday it was expecting to re-start operations between Kamloops and Vancouver, a section of line that had been knocked out by heavy rain and flooding that disrupted connections in British Columbia a week ago.
