The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) reported an uptick in truck drivers crossing to Canada from the U.S. last week. It’s another encouraging sign for cross-border freight during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Just over 81,000 truckers crossed the U.S.-Canada border during the week ending May 17, the CBSA reported on May 19. It’s the highest tally since the week ending March 29. Also impressive is that this happened leading up to Monday’s Victoria Day holiday.

It just keeps getting worse for Canada’s trucking industry during the COVID-19 pandemic. Even as freight volumes recover, the job losses are staggering.

Canada’s transportation and warehousing sector shed 102,800 jobs in April, or about 10.4% of the workforce, federal jobs data released Friday shows. Canada shed about 2 million jobs, or 11% of its sector-wide workforce during the month, bringing the total to 3 million since February.

Canadian freight claws out from ‘deep hole’

Canadian freight appears to have turned a corner — at least as far as truckload volumes are concerned.

At Challenger Motor Freight, one of Canada’s largest carriers, the change took shape after volumes bottomed out about two weeks ago.
