Cathay Pacific cargo traffic shrinks 25% in October

Cargo volumes at Cathay Pacific in October continued a pattern of double-digit contraction as strict China COVID policies hamper flight operations and the traditional fall surge in airfreight activity ahead of the holidays failed to materialize.

Hong Kong-based Cathay Pacific, a major combination carrier with a fleet of 20 Boeing 747 freighters, has tumbled from the fifth- to the ninth-largest cargo carrier in the world in the past year, according to the International Air Transport Association.

Port of New Orleans sees mixed results for August cargo volume

Vessel omissions and a shortage of shipping containers resulted in a mixed bag of throughput results at the Port of New Orleans (Port NOLA) in August.

Fourteen vessel omissions at the port in August represented a 30% increase in omissions compared to the same month last year.

“A lot of [the omissions are] attributed to how the carriers are dealing with their schedule recovery on the basis of what’s happening in the global supply chain,” Todd Rives, Port NOLA’s vice president and chief commercial...

Coronavirus-related declines spur Port of Oakland budget decrease

The Port of Oakland said coronavirus-induced business declines forced it to cut back its spending plans.

Port commissioners last week approved a fiscal year 2021 budget with 15.84% less in operating and capital expenditures than the previous year. The California port’s 2021 fiscal year began Wednesday.

“This budget is based on neither unsubstantiated hope nor on speculation of any worst-case scenario,” said Port of Oakland Executive Director Danny Wan. “It is based on best estimates of how our...

East Coasts ports optimistic for post-coronavirus recovery

Officials from South Carolina and New York/New Jersey ports see an end in sight to blanked sailings and lower volumes.

“Despite what’s happening right now, we are very optimistic. We think May and June is going to be the worst of it in terms of COVID impacts and then I think we’re going to bounce back quite strong,” Sam Ruda, marine director for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey (PANYNJ), told the Agriculture Transportation Coalition (AgTC) during its virtual annual meeting Thursday.

2019 container throughput of King Abdullah Port wanes

The volume of import containers handled by the King Abdullah Port in 2019 reached 203,670 TEU compared to 190,005 TEU in 2018, representing an increase of 7.2%. Meanwhile, market conditions led to a 12.2% decline in annual throughput for container handling.

This can be attributed to the current tensions in trade relations between China and the United States, together with a decrease in transshipment operations caused by recent changes in shipping lines, according to the announcement.

The Port of Cork has reported that the combined total traffic through both the Port of Cork and Bantry Bay Port Company took a dip of 5% from 10.6 million tonnes, to just over 10 million tonnes in 2019.
