FMC upholds ruling upending current chassis pool system

Long-standing practices for feeding chassis into intermodal markets have been dealt another blow in legal proceedings before the Federal Maritime Commission.

In a 4-1 vote Tuesday, the FMC upheld an administrative law judge’s (ALJ) ruling from just over a year ago that the current system of major oceangoing carriers designating exclusive chassis providers for port-to-port moves, also known as merchant hauling, violates federal law.

The case was brought in 2020 by the Intermodal Motor Carriers...

Trac Intermodal CEO eyes continued growth for chassis industry

Now that the crunch for chassis has abated from pandemic-fueled shortages, companies can return to business as usual, right? Not so, says Dan Walsh, president and CEO of Trac Intermodal, a North American marine chassis provider based in Princeton, New Jersey.

FreightWaves recently chatted with Walsh to discuss forecasts for chassis demand. Expect e-commerce, the need for supply data visibility and shifting manufacturing patterns in Asia to play a role, according to Walsh.

Loaded and Rolling: Truck parking survey highlights public awareness challenges

Truck parking survey highlights public awareness challenges

(Graphic: CloudTrucks)

Last month, CloudTrucks surveyed 1,000 U.S. adults about general perceptions of truck drivers and if they have heard of the truck parking shortage. The results, published in CloudTrucks’ 2023 Truck Parking Shortage Survey, highlight that while Americans generally have a positive view of truck drivers, most respondents didn’t know that the parking shortage had a major impact on their quality of life.

One major...

IANA panel: Intermodal chassis squeeze easing, but it’s far from over

LONG BEACH, Calif. — The great chassis squeeze of 2021-22 isn’t over and likely will leave in its wake a changed market for the equipment so vital for intermodal movements, according to a panel of industry executives.

That was a key takeaway from the panel on the second day of the Intermodal Association of North America’s annual exposition. While the worst may be behind the industry, things aren’t all that much better, several of the panel members said.

The disruption in the market has taken a...

Trac Intermodal partners with American Made Chassis to produce more chassis

Trac Intermodal and American Made Chassis (AMC) have partnered to increase Trac’s fleet of 40-foot chassis in a bid to increase chassis supply, especially amid the ongoing import surge and elevated equipment dwell time.

AMC is an alliance of LB Steel and Integrated Industries.

The agreement calls for LB to build frames, while Integrated Industries will blast, paint and install all equipment components at its Dixmoor facility in Illinois, Trac Intermodal said.

Chassis made by AMC are already...

Southeast ports, carriers sign on to plan to upgrade chassis pool

Five stakeholders have signed a memorandum of understanding establishing the South Atlantic Chassis Pool 3.0, which will serve the region starting in October 2023.

SACP 3.0 will be based on a single provider pool model, and it will upgrade and expand the existing pool. It will have 60,000 chassis available to truckers, beneficial cargo owners, ocean carriers and port users, said a Monday announcement by the Ocean Carrier Equipment Management Association (OCEMA), Georgia Ports Authority,...

Rail industry wants to keep infrastructure, capacity projects on track

The issues that are before the Surface Transportation Board — reciprocal switching and proposed acquisitions — are important to rail shippers and the broader industry in 2022.

But the allocation of federal grants for infrastructure projects, regulatory discussions on crew staffing and automated track inspections, and efforts to relieve supply chain congestion, especially at the ports, also are weighing on the minds of those representing rail and intermodal interests.

“The freight rail industry...

3 ways shippers are gaining control of their supply chains

The supply chain’s fragmentation and fragility have been exposed over the past 20 months, leading many shippers to invest in their supply chains in ways they hadn’t before. Historically, and in soft markets, shippers had pricing power over carriers and often placed their transportation networks on the operational back burner, but this pandemic-induced awakening forced many to take action.

While much of the supply chain stress stems from a lack of labor and infrastructure, be it drivers,...

Gaining intermodal asset status without manual inspection key to port efficiency

container chassis

During the second quarter of 2021, intermodal container volume increased almost 30% year-over-year. Shifts in consumer behavior, labor shortages at ports and other factors force ports to work around the clock and freight technology companies to zero in on solutions to increase that velocity.

PowerFleet, a leading provider of subscription-based wireless Internet of Things (IoT) technology and end-to-end solutions, recently demoed two new products that will address the challenge of supply chain...

Moving volumes smoothly: TRAC Intermodal CEO’s 3 keys

A photograph of chassis at a rail yard.

FreightWaves recently chatted with Daniel Walsh, president and CEO of TRAC Intermodal, about reported chassis shortages and the congestion issues facing the supply chain.

This question-and-answer interview was edited for clarity and length.

FREIGHTWAVES: How is chassis availability in the regions that you serve? What are you seeing in the markets that you serve, and what is TRAC Intermodal doing to ensure things are running smoothly?

WALSH: “Just starting with the supply chain flows: Obviously...
