Is the best place to produce green methanol on an offshore platform?

Producing green methanol requires green electricity. So it makes sense to produce it near the green electricity source. One novel solution does just that by producing green methanol on an offshore platform close to offshore wind electricity. Developed by China’s Kindon New Energy Technology (Jiangsu) Co. Ltd., the solution has now received an AiP (approval in principle) from classification society RINA. The solution comes from China’s Kindon New Energy Technology (Jiangsu) Co. Ltd.

Bulker operator SDTR Marine eyes CCS options

Singapore-headquartered bulker operator SDTR Marine has entered into a Joint Development Project (JDP) with classification society DNV that will explore the feasibility of installing a carbon capture and storage (CCS) system on an 85,000 dwt Kamsarmax bulk carrier.

As part of the JDP, DNV and SDTR Marine will collaborate on a techno-economic analysis of CCS implementation aboard the bulk carrier. Utilizing DNV’s FuelPath, the study aims to evaluate the economic viability of different fuel and...

ClassNK issues AiP for 160,000 cu.m liquefied hydrogen carrier

AiP for liquefied hydrogen carrier

Classification Society ClassNK has issued an Approval in Principle (AiP) for a 160,000 cubic meter liquefied hydrogen carrier developed by shipbuilder Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd (KHI).

VIDEO: Kawasaki launches liquefied hydrogen carrier

This follows on from its earlier classification of world’s first liquefied hydrogen carrier, the 1,250 cubic meter KHI-built Suiso Frontier and its granting in 2021 of an AiP to KHI for the design of a liquefied hydrogen cargo containment system (CCS) with a...

ABS, too, withdraws class services to Russia

The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has joined the growing list of classification societies withdrawing services to Russian-linked entities.

The society says that “after careful consideration of the situation in the Ukraine and the Black Sea as well as the applicable sanctions,” it has taken the decision to withdraw all class services involving Russian vessels, assets and companies.

It says that the decision “follows the tragic events developing in Ukraine and a thorough evaluation of the...

ClassNK makes IMO GBS archiving more convenient

In response to user feedback, ClassNK has significantly simplified the procedures for uploading data such as ship plans to the ClassNK Archive Center (NKAC). The NKAC service was launched in 2016 to help shipowners and shipbuilders comply with IMO goal-based ship construction standards (GBS). Applicable to bulk carriers and oil tankers of 150 meters length and over completed on or after July 1, 2020, the standards require the storage of Ship Construction File (SCF) data onboard the vessel...

New DNV rules include “Fuel Ready”

In the latest updates to its rules for ship classification, DNV has released multiple new class notations to help the maritime meet the challenge of decarbonization challenge. The include “Fuel Ready,” a notation that gives shipowners the option to prepare for a later conversion to multiple different alternative fuel options, and “Gas fueled ammonia” for ammonia fueled vessels, to stay ahead of shipping’s ever tightening carbon reduction requirements.

DNV’s annual report on the energy transition...

BV releases “Ammonia-Prepared” class notation

Classification society Bureau Veritas (BV) has released an “Ammonia-Prepared” notation and has developed a rule note for ammonia as a marine fuel to support shipowners, designers, shipyards, and charterers in advancing their plans to use ammonia in a zero carbon future.

Ammonia-Prepared is applicable to newbuilds and certifies that a ship has been designed and constructed to be converted to use ammonia as fuel at a later date.

The notation targets the spaces and structural components that will...
