Indian shippers re-route more transhipment cargo to Nhava Sheva and Mundra

Cargo owners at India’s hinterland points of Chennai and Kolkata are rerouting more shipments to JNPT (Nhava Sheva) or Mundra instead of feedering to hub or intermediate ports in South Asia for mainline, long-haul connectivity.
These are usually Colombo (Sri Lanka), Singapore and Port Klang (Malaysia) .
What became the driving force in helping shippers alter their long-time supply chain pursuits away from transhipment is the introduction of block-train services by major …

Call for Utmost Care While Handling Dangerous Cargoes

  • The events still unfolding at an anchorage off Colombo serve once more to underline the continuing problem of ship fires caused by the mishandling of dangerous goods.

Snapshot: Port volumes as muddy as hell

Preliminary port throughput data for the world’s largest 25 container ports has been published by Alphaliner this week.
The headline is that 13 of the top 25 saw growth, and 12 saw box volumes shrink – we should be wary of extrapolating this to the wider port market however, as it is still unclear whether their gains are the result of market growth or more simply the result of smaller ports’ losses (check Dalian below).

Some relief at last for Bangladesh shippers as India offers use of its ports

India has offered Bangladesh shippers the use of its seaports for export and import trade to third countries.
The offer came during a virtual meeting last week between the prime ministers of the two countries, as the regional transhipment hub ports of Singapore, Colombo and Port Klang, with limited manpower during the pandemic and facing severe congestion, are struggling to handle containers.
“We have offered the use of our seaports to Bangladesh for …

Colombo port congestion: 50,000 teu logjam drives delays and rate hikes

A backlog of 50,000 teu at the port of Colombo is causing chaos for South Asian transhipment cargo.
The capital of Sri Lanka has been under a Covid-lockdown for the past couple of weeks, while a labour shortage at the city’s container terminals has caused congestion since early October.
Now the bottleneck is impacting supply chains in neighbouring India and Bangladesh.
Rohan Masakorala, chief executive of Shippers’ Academy Colombo, said the port of …

Colombo port congestion brings extra expense for Bangladeshi shippers

Feeder vessel operators to and from Chittagong and the hubs of Colombo, Singapore and Port Klang are to slap emergency cost recovery surcharges (ECRS) on outbound and inbound shipments to Bangladesh.
The moves comes amid acute congestion at the hubs, linked to pandemic-related reduced numbers of port workers,
Feeder vessels calling at Colombo are facing waits of up to five days and, in Singapore, more than two days to get a berth. …
