260 containers lost, 65 damaged in Maersk Eindhoven at-sea mishap

A.P. Møller – Maersk has confirmed 260 containers were lost overboard and an additional 65 damaged on the deck of the Eindhoven on Wednesday.

“As previously reported, the Maersk Eindhoven experienced a loss of engine propulsion for three to four minutes while sailing 45 nautical miles off northern Japan in heavy seas,” a spokesman said Friday. “The loss of maneuverability resulted in severe rolling with 260 containers overboard and 65 containers damaged on deck.

Ocean container losses topple annual average in 2 months

The World Shipping Council issued an eye-opening report last July. What seemed like a steady stream of vessel fires, capesizes and container losses was in fact a small drop in the global ocean shipping bucket. Storm-beaten ONE Apus berths in Japan

Now that the ONE Apus has berthed in Japan, investigators can begin to sort through what could be thousands of damaged containers on the ship’s deck. This is in addition to the 1,816 containers reported lost at sea.

Ocean Network Express reported 1,816 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) fell from the ONE Apus as it sailed from Yantian, China, to Long Beach, California, last week.

Pacific International Lines Losses Double in 2020

  • Pacific International Lines (PIL) remains in the red, with a net loss that nearly doubled to US$120 million for the first half of 2020.
