Port of Long Beach delivering cargo information in waves

The Port of Long Beach is changing the way cargo information flows.

“We’ve changed how we post our cargo snapshot,” the port tweeted Monday, announcing it would publish “the new WAVE (Weekly Advance Volume Estimate) report on Monday mornings instead of a daily snapshot.”

The tweet included a link to this week’s WAVE report

The Port of Long Beach said in a press release that it had launched the report “to shine a spotlight on anticipated cargo flow and widely share key data with every link in...

Savannah volume down just 1% and total tonnage a record

A small dip can be a big win during a pandemic, when global supply chain disruptions have taken huge bites out of volumes at U.S. ports.

So the Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) announcement Monday that fiscal-year volume at the Port of Savannah was down by less than 1% compared to the previous year wasn’t bad news.

The Port of Savannah handled 4.44 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in fiscal year 2020, which ended June 30.

And the GPA found good news where it could. It said that despite...

Two hundred of those units will be equipped with advanced controlled atmosphere technology, said Singapore-based ONE, which said it already has one of the largest state-of-the-art reefer fleets and procured 6,000 units last year.

Global refrigerated container volume grew by more than 7% in 2019, according to ONE, which said that...

2019 container throughput of King Abdullah Port wanes

The volume of import containers handled by the King Abdullah Port in 2019 reached 203,670 TEU compared to 190,005 TEU in 2018, representing an increase of 7.2%. Meanwhile, market conditions led to a 12.2% decline in annual throughput for container handling.

This can be attributed to the current tensions in trade relations between China and the United States, together with a decrease in transshipment operations caused by recent changes in shipping lines, according to the announcement.

Several...

NWSA marks sluggish start in 2020

The Northwest Seaport Alliance, a marine cargo operating partnership of the ports of Seattle and Tacoma, sees its total container volume for January 2020 was 263,816TEU, a 19.1% decrease from January 2019.

Following an unprecedented international container throughput for the same month last year — tied to shippers moving cargo ahead of tariffs, it created a larger than usual gap in the year-over-year figures for January 2020, according to NWSA.

The North American alliance reports that imports...

Oakland concerns about Coronavirus long-term impact

Port of Oakland containerized import volume jumped 7.3 percent last month over January 2019 totals, according to Port’s data. Exports were also increased, lifting hopes for recovery from a US-China trade war, said the Port.

However, Port of Oakland came with one question in its latest release:
Would concern over the fast-spreading coronavirus dampen trade growth?

“It’s possible,” said Port of Oakland Maritime Director John Driscoll. “The uptick in January was encouraging but we’re hearing from...
