Trump vs. Biden: How the winner could affect ocean shipping

Biden Trump

The outcome of the U.S. election will steer stimulus spending, energy policy, trade relations, geopolitics and environmental regulation — and consequently, ocean freight rates — for years to come.

With just three weeks to go, financial analysts are weighing in on potential fallout.

On one end of the spectrum lies a relative status quo. On the other, a “blue sweep,” in which Joe Biden defeats Donald Trump for the presidency and Democrats retain the House and take a slim lead in the Senate.

“All...

ANL sets up Singapore / Port Hedland route

Container shipping line ANL has announced a regular direct connection between Singapore and Port Hedland for break-bulk, containerised and out-of-gauge cargo.

Sailing from Singapore as of 30 October, the ANL service, which is called “The Pilbara Connection”, will help reduce the length of the WA supply chain, reduce road haulage and help shippers and consignees to import and export more easily from remote north west Australia.

The service will sail from Singapore ever 20 days and offers an eight...

Hapag-Lloyd CEO cautious despite high demand, rates

Demand for ocean shipping is healthy again and freight rates are high, but Hapag-Lloyd CEO Rolf Habben Jansen doesn’t want to “get carried away,” cautioning there still could be economic hits to come from the continuing coronavirus pandemic.

“The rates on the trans-Pacific have been very, very strong. Also Asia and Europe have been strong. Lately Latin America has been going up,” Jansen said during a press briefing last week.

“Volume has not been as severely impacted by COVID-19 as we...

FMC considers changing service contract filing requirements

U.S. Federal Maritime Commission

The U.S. Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) on Friday announced it initiated a notice of proposed rulemaking that will consider a change to regulations that would allow initial service contracts to be filed at the agency up to 30 days after the agreement’s effective date.

This action is separate from the temporary exemption granted by the commission in April and extended earlier this month.

FMC Chairman Michael Khouri sees this potential regulatory action as one of many taken by the agency in...

South Carolina sees uptick in port activity

The South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) said its September volumes reflect the strongest year-over-year activity since the COVID-19 pandemic hit and show a continued recovery and strength in containers, vehicles and inland moves.

The SCPA handled a record-September 195,101 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) at the Wando Welch and North Charleston terminals. It said the total was a “slight increase” year-over-year. The SCPA moved 581,912 TEUs in the first quarter of fiscal year 2021, which...

Get ready for blowout Q3 results in container shipping

container ship

“We knew it was going to be good, but dadgum …,” exclaimed Stifel analyst Ben Nolan upon seeing the preliminary third-quarter 2020 results from Matson (NYSE: MATX).

Matson’s disclosures offer the first signals of how solid Q3 2020 earnings will be for container lines across the board. Container-line profits exceeded expectations in Q2 2020, a period when volumes were weak. In the third quarter, volumes and rates surged — and not just in the trans-Pacific trade.

“The stars are aligning for...

Do you know where your chassis are?

container chassis

Container chassis may be simple assets, but there is nothing simple about tracking their location throughout the U.S. supply chain.

Chassis providers and technology developers in recent years have chipped away at the challenge to electronically track usage of these assets with shippers, third-party logistics providers (3PLs), carriers, marine terminals and rail ramps.

“The problem is that there are many parties and systems involved when using chassis to dray containers,” Glenn Jones, global vice...
