Cathay Pacific limps through Q1 with 20% cargo capacity

A white jumbo jet with teal tail and Cathay Pacific Cargo lettering lifts off from runway.

Cathay Pacific carried fewer than 25,000 passengers in January, a 99.2% decline from three years ago, and cargo volume is down to 21% of pre-COVID levels, according to monthly traffic figures released Thursday that illustrate the devastating impact of Hong Kong’s restrictive reaction to the omicron variant.

With its large freighter fleet and extensive long-haul passenger network, Cathay has traditionally been one of the crown jewels in air cargo. It was the third-largest carrier by amount of...

Wabash backlog swells as trailer maker completes go-to-market makeover

Wabash has a lot of trailers and bodies to build based on a 70% year-over-year growth in its backlog — so many that it will take practically no more orders this year.

COVID-related absences, the ongoing supply chain crisis and higher commodity prices it could not recover from customers hit the company hard in Q4. About 5% to 10% of the $2.5 billion in unbuilt orders — an increase of $600 million from the end of Q3 — slipped into 2022.

That is going to make a typically tough first quarter for...

Relief has arrived for the struggling NSW landside freight supply chains which have been battered by workers falling prey to Omicron-Delta and to being forced to isolate by NSW government rules. An amendment that entered into force today (Friday 14 January 2022) makes it abundantly clear that freight workers have an exemption from the isolation rules that enables them to go to work.

Empty supermarket shelves and extensive...

New January 2022 data from the Neptune Declaration shows that 59.8% of seafarers in its sample have been vaccinated against COVID. This is an increase of 10.3 percentage points since November 2021.

By way of comparison, the proportion of the EU...

New index measures supply chain pressure — and it’s really high

container shipping supply chain

Researchers at the New York Federal Reserve have a new way to measure the logistics chaos that’s being partially blamed for consumer price inflation: the Global Supply Chain Pressure Index (GSCPI).

The new measure aggregates 27 indicators — including two shipping indexes, the Baltic Dry Index (BDI) and Harpex index — into a standard deviation from the average since 1997. It’s designed to provide “a more comprehensive summary of potential disruptions affecting global supply chains.”

So, how high...
