Stringent COVID-19 Protocols Lead To Unexpected Delay In Crew Change At Chennai Port

Old Port of Sekondi

The crew change, which had been periodically happening at the Chennai port, has been struck following the stringent COVID-19 protocols that are now in place.

Negative RT-PCR tests are compulsory to undergo a crew change in ships. This has led to unforeseen delays in implementing changes associated with new crew members replacing the old ones. In a vessel, an officer serves for up to six months but the sailors work for nearly nine to 10 months.

Shipping firms are firm about needing a negative...

seafarer wearing mask

Shipowners, seafarers’ unions and maritime employer groups are establishing their own approved international network of quarantine facilities to ensure seafarers can safely join ships, despite unpredictable changes to government border policies. The move comes as the Omicron variant spurs governments to close their borders to seafarers needing to leave and join ships.

The Crew Enhanced Quarantine International Programme (#CrewEQUIP) is a partnership between the International Maritime Employers’...

Crew Change Difficulties Remain Strong Despite Improving Seafarer Vaccination Rates

NDCCI-PR-November-scaled

New national lockdowns, an increase in flight cancellations, travel restrictions, and increasingly strict crew change requirements, especially in Asia, are preventing seafarers from going back home after completing their contracts. This is despite a strong increase in vaccine rates during the last month, ship managers report.

The latest Indicator shows that the number of seafarers onboard vessels beyond the expiry of their contract has decreased to 7.1% from 7.9% in the previous month, whilst...

Row Covid-19 or Coronavirus vaccine flasks on white background

Covid-19 vaccinations of seafarers are critical in solving the crew change crisis. Hence, as of August 2021, the Neptune Declaration Crew Change Indicator has been expanded to include the aggregate percentage of seafarers who have been vaccinated. Data from August shows that only 15.3% of seafarers have been vaccinated.

In comparison, the share of the population fully vaccinated against Covid-19 in large shipping nations in Europe, North America and Asia are at around 50%. This shows that...

Untimely Demise Of Seafarer During International Crew Change Was Avoidable – ITF

cargo ship representation silhouette

The preventable death of a seafarer is a reminder to the Australian Government to implement a nationally consistent standard operating procedure for crew changes on trading vessels.

The man passed away after falling off a ladder on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast. The ladder was primarily used for transferring seafarers between a small vessel, and the Formosabulk Cement, a Liberian-flagged bulk carrier.

The incident took place about five nautical miles off Mooloolaba. Since it has happened in...

Slow Vaccination Drives For Seafarers Could Worsen Global Shipping Chaos

More than two dozen crew members of the Algoma Victory traveled to the International Seafarers Center in the Port of Long Beach to receive the Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 vaccine on May 25, 2021.

Global vaccination drives for seafarers are currently going so slowly that it will be unable to prevent potential outbreaks on ships, resulting in trade disruptions, endangering maritime employees, and slowing economies trying to recover from the pandemic shock.

Infections on ships could impact already strained supply chains as Europe and the US recover and companies begin to stock up for Christmas.

The shipping industry is sounding alarms as infections tend to rise and ports continue to restrict...
