Cyprus pushes for action on crew changes

Cyprus’ deputy shipping minister, Natasa Pilides, has urged governments around the globe to adapt and adopt the International Chamber of Shipping’s (ICS) protocol that allows countries to safely effect crew changes.

According to some estimates up to 200,000 crew have been be prevented from ending contracts as nation states, looking to stall the spread of Covid-19 virus, have shut out seafarers, blocking them from disembarking from vessels, even after their contracts have ended.

Seafarer repatriation is industry’s top priority

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has announced it has endorsed new protocols designed to lift barriers to crew changes, as the need for crew repatriation is of the utmost urgency.

Following its meeting on 30 April the IMO reported that the need for ships to change crews and for seafarers to fly home at the end of their periods of service have emerged as two of the biggest challenges facing the shipping industry as a result of the Covid-19 crisis.

Cyprus supports seafarers with formal crew changeover process

The Cyprus Shipping Deputy Ministry (SDM) has formally announced a new process to facilitate crew changes during the COVID-19 pandemic. Crew changes for vessels are possible in Cyprus provided certain conditions are met.
