Ship industry companies are increasingly innovating in robotics

Research and innovation in robotics in the ship equipment supply, product and services sector is on the rise.

The most recent figures show that the number of robotics related patent applications in the industry stood at 19 in the three months ending January – up from 12 over the same period in 2021.

Figures for patent grants related to robotics followed a similar pattern to filings – growing from six in the three months ending January 2021 to seven in the same period in 2022.

In the second half of 2021 the number of deals relating to China’s socioeconomic impact decreased significantly by 25% from the same period in 2020.

This marks a deceleration in growth from the 150% increase in deals that occurred in H1 2021 relative to the same period a year earlier.

Data analytics hiring levels in the ship industry rose in February 2022

The proportion of ship equipment supply, product and services companies hiring for data analytics related positions rose significantly in February 2022 compared with the equivalent month last year, with 60% of the companies included in our analysis recruiting for at least one such position.

This latest figure was higher than the 49.2% of companies who were hiring for data analytics related jobs a year ago but a decrease compared to the figure of 60.7% in January 2022.

Artificial intelligence hiring levels in the ship industry rose to a year-high in January 2022

The proportion of ship equipment supply, product and services companies hiring for artificial intelligence related positions rose significantly in January 2022 compared with the equivalent month last year, with 41.7% of the companies included in our analysis recruiting for at least one such position.

This latest figure was higher than the 29.2% of companies who were hiring for artificial intelligence related jobs a year ago and an increase compared to the figure of 34.4% in December 2021.

Asia-Pacific is seeing a hiring boom in ship industry fintech roles

Asia-Pacific was the fastest growing region for fintech hiring among ship industry companies in the three months ending December.

The number of roles in Asia-Pacific made up 39.3 per cent of total fintech jobs – up from 17 per cent in the same quarter in 2020.

That was followed by North America, which saw a 4.6 year-on-year percentage point change in fintech roles.
