In December 2023, US container import volume increased by 0.4% from November 2023. The slight aggregate increase masks counter intuitive swings in volume at West, East and Gulf Coast ports. The top East and Gulf Coast ports saw increases, while the top West Coast ports saw decreases.

US imports dragged down by seasonality, Panama Canal crisis

The good news for container lines: U.S. imports are still higher than they were before the pandemic. The bad news: This year’s string of month-on-month gains is over. Seasonality, combined with worsening conditions at the Panama Canal, pulled down imports in November — a negative for freight rates.

According to data from Descartes (NASDAQ: DSGX) released Thursday, U.S. ports handled 2,099,408 twenty-foot equivalent units of imports last month, 9% less than in October.

Japan – US box trade declines for first time after February

Container exports from Japan to the United States in October decreased by 1.9% over the same month of last year to 43,823TEU, which translates to the first year-on-year contraction in eight months since February, according to American research company Descartes Datamyne.

Regarding the volumes between the two countries compared to the previous month, they shrank by 4.2%, according to the Japan International Freight Forwarders Association (JIFFA).

Asia to US box movement slows down

According to U.S. research company Descartes Datamyne, container movement from Asia to USA fell in February for the first time in 24 months. Boxes to the U.S from 10 Asian countries and regions decreased by 5.5%, which translates to 1.235.684 TEUs in February. It’s a result of the trade war between the two global giants, America and China.

Inbound containers from the U.S. to Asia were also less in January, falling 4.1% to 411.748 TEUs, due to declines in waste paper and wood imports to China....
