Global shipping, standards and documentation body BIMCO has recently published its electronic Bill of Lading Standard for the bulk shipping sector.

“Our goal is to help accelerate the digitalisation process by establishing common industry standards for electronic bills of lading,” BIMCO said in a formal statement. It added...

EEXI and CII – A gathering storm?

EEXI and CII – A gathering storm?

Nick Austin

Shipping lawyers like me often talk about “the next big thing”, but rarely do we pluralise it to suggest that not one, but maybe two or even three transformational changes are about to be keenly felt across the sector.

A case in point: much has been said (including by me) about the rapid pace of digitisation in shipping. And in particular the advent of electronic trade documents which have...

Shipping lines agree T&T digital standards and call for ‘widespread adoption’

Ocean freight customers can now gain access to a standards-based API, following the adoption of track and trace (T&T) standards.
The Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) said today the majority of its members had adopted T&T standards, enabling an API which allows shippers real-time, cross-carrier data on their containers.
DCSA said “widespread adoption” would create better reliability and real-time responsiveness and carrier MSC called for collaboration across the industry.
“While a...

All shipping has to do to beat air cargo to e-freight, is be nippier than a glacier

Dear ocean freight industry,
News that the Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) is frustrated with the lack of progress in digitising bills of lading will come as no surprise to those of us who have long-studied inaction in air cargo.
The DCSA is determined to avoid the same mistakes, and chief Thomas Bagge is laying down the gauntlet: can you, the ocean freight industry, make this inevitable change faster than air cargo …

Staff the star performers as Gebrüder Weiss expands turnover and footprint

E-commerce, and strong air and sea sales saw Gebrüder Weiss enjoy an uptick in turnover in 2020, despite falling revenue in its land transport and logistics division.
The forwarder, which expanded last year, posted net sales of €1.77bn ($2.1bn), up 3.7%, but “various restrictions and the closure of some customers’ plants, especially during Q2” brought a 4.3% decline to €1.1bn in its land transport and logistics arm.
Perhaps the most noticeable figure shared …

As digitisation improves visibility, LCL is becoming more attractive to shippers

The shortage of containers in major tradelanes is driving demand for less-than-containerload (LCL) solutions.
With boxes only available at exorbitant rates, more shippers and forwarders are more open to less-straightforward alternatives to full container offerings.
“Demand is up,” confirmed Graham Cousins, chief strategy officer of Vanguard Logistics Services. “A lot is driven by shippers’ need for flexibility to find a solution to move their cargo.”
And when container rates are high, many...

Most ports more than a year late complying with digital data exchange rules

Only around 30% of ports globally have implemented the mandatory IMO convention for the introduction of electronic information exchange between ships and ports to facilitate clearance processes.
Known as the FAL Convention and signed-off by the IMO and its member states, the legislation came into force in April 2019, with countries given a 12-month implementation window.
Now, nearly a year past the April 2020 deadline, around 70% of ports have not complied, …

Smart players using smart container solutions will gain valuable, shareable data

This article is a follow-up to two earlier pieces, produced largely by the same authors, outlining the development of semantic and technical interoperability in digitising global multimodal supply chains.
Smart Container solutions empower supply chain stakeholders to enhance their operations using reliable physical data to provide door-to-door visibility and AI-based predictive services for deriving predictive event determination, as well as visibility into the status and environmental...

DCSA publishes first process standards for use of electronic bills of lading

The Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) today published its first data and process standards for the submission of shipping instructions and issuance of bills of lading (B/Ls).
The development is one of the first steps for the widespread adoption of electronic B/Ls in the box shipping industry.
“Digitising documentation, starting with the bill of lading, is key to the simplification and digitalisation of global trade,” said Thomas Bagge, DCSA chief executive.
“The alignment …
