Unfortunately there continues to be a container backlog, induced by industrial action, in Sydney at the moment.  That backlog has been aggravated by recent bad weather.  It may get worse given the likelihood of new industrial action.

Current status: congestion times and industrial action

Shipping Australia understands that, in Sydney, the current recovery time is now about two to three days at DP World Australia and is about 15 days at Patrick Terminals.

The...

Extreme container disruption continues in Sydney despite industrial cease-fire

Ocean shipping and the landside container supply chain into and out of Sydney both remain extremely disrupted despite the ceasefire between the union and stevedores. Industrial action from a few weeks ago is the root-cause of the ongoing delays.

Shipping is fundamentally delayed; situation is not resolving quickly

Shipping Australia can confirm that there is currently a 21-day delay for some vessels calling at Patrick Terminals in Sydney and all vessel schedules are disrupted to some extent. For...

SAL acknowledges DPWA and MUA success

The ship operator’s representative body Shipping Australia Limited (SAL) has welcomed the compromise agreement reached by the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) and DP World Australia (DPWA).

Unions and management at DPWA have agreed in principle to a deal that will end industrial action at DPWA terminals in Port Botany, Fremantle, Melbourne and Brisbane, while offering dockers better conditions.

SAL CEO Rod Nairn, an outspoken critic of the union’s tactics, said, “it is certainly positive and...

Shipping Australia welcomes news of in-principle DPWA/MUA agreement

Cessation of industrial action at DP World Australia terminals around the country is welcomed by Shipping Australia.

Yesterday evening, the terminal operator informed industry that an in-principle enterprise agreement had been reached for the next three years at the DPWA Terminal in Port Botany, Sydney.

Of great importance is the news that no protected industrial action will take place at DPWA in Sydney and that industrial action has also been withdrawn at DPWA terminals in Brisbane, Fremantle...

DP World Australia expects to resolve dockers dispute

Dock workers in Port Botany, Sydney Australia, are expected to reach a negotiated agreement to their dispute with DP World Australia (DPWA) following a moratorium on industrial action last week.

Ongoing negotiations after the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) and DPWA decided to negotiate a settlement appear to have borne fruit as the two sides are reportedly close to a final agreement, according to local sources.

Australian port congestion ongoing

In spite of the relief brought through the cancellation of imminent industrial action at DP World Australia’s (DPWA) terminal in Sydney congestion at a number of terminals remains.

As a result of ongoing industrial action organised by the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) congestion at Port Botany, in south Sydney has carriers such as Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd take measures to make sure their services can maintain their schedules.

Maersk announced late last week that disruption in Sydney was causing...
