Port of Long Beach marks 87% cut in diesel emissions

The Port of Long Beach reported dramatic reductions in air pollution, including an 87% cut in diesel emissions, according to the port’s latest annual emissions inventory. This follows a series of aggressive actions by the Port to curtail pollution over the last years.

In addition to diesel particulates, the study found the Port’s smog-forming nitrogen oxides have reduced by 56% since 2005. Sulphur oxides were down 97% and greenhouse gases are 16% lower.

Rotterdam presents five selected for shore-based power project

The municipality of Rotterdam and the Port of Rotterdam Authority launched a pilot project which focuses on a variety of mobile shore-based power solutions for sea-going vessels and announced that five commercial parties are selected for the project; ENGIE Ventures & Integrated Solutions BV; PON Power & its subsidiaries; Aggreko Benelux; Mobiele Stroom BV and JP Energy Systems.

Norden unveils decarbonization plans

Danish shipping company Norden announced plans to boost decarbonization efforts and meet ambitious emission reduction targets, providing a CO2 neutral transportation.

Marseille aims to be Med’s first electric port

Among a string of new eco-friendly initiatives, the Marseille Fos port authority is to spend €20 million over the next six years to extend shoreside electrical connections for berthed vessels to every ferry, cruiseship and repair quay within the Marseille eastern harbour.

India may not comply with IMO 2020 sulphur cap in domestic fleet

As Hindu Business Line reports, an Indian official stated that India is thinking of not imposing the IMO 2020 sulphur regulations in its domestic waters, following the example that was firstly set by Indonesia, who then backed out.

Specifically, Indian National Shipowners Association (INSA) CEO Anil Devli discussed that the low sulphur fuel that has to be burnt to be in line with these regulations is estimated to cost about $80-130 per tonne, whereas the scrubbers will cost about $2 million....
