Most ports more than a year late complying with digital data exchange rules

Only around 30% of ports globally have implemented the mandatory IMO convention for the introduction of electronic information exchange between ships and ports to facilitate clearance processes.

IMO signs partnership to smooth way for maritime digitalisation

A new agreement has been signed by several world bodies to help smooth the digital flow of information between ships and onshore authorities.

Signed by the International Maritime Organization, the World Customs Organization, the UN Economic Commission for Europe and the International Organization for Standardization, the partnership agreement will help support maritime digitalization, the IMO said.

BIMCO receives support for proposal to harmonize data

BIMCO has received solid support for a submission at the 43rd session of the Facilitation Committee meeting (FAL 43) held at the IMO Headquarters on 8-12 April, that will ensure harmonisation of data exchanges and limit the administrative burden for ships.

The submission proposed the introduction of additional e-business solutions that supplement communication stipulated in the FAL Convention.

Shipping industry in favour of IMO’s new anti-corruption agenda

IMO agreed to address maritime corruption by including this issue in its work programme for the Facilitation Committee. The decision to include an anti-corruption agenda came during the latest meeting of the IMO’s Facilitation Committee (FAL) in response to a submission from Liberia, Marshall Islands, Norway, United Kingdom, US and Vanuatu. Malaysia announced that it’s in favour of IMO’s treaty enhancing communication between ships and ports. This brings the number of contracting States to the Convention on Facilitation of International Maritime Traffic (FAL Convention) to 123.
