‘Move boxes to private yards’ plea as Chittagong congestion worsens

Bangladesh customs authorities have allowed logistics operators to shift a further six types of goods in containers to private off-docks in a bid to reduce the number of containers in Chittagong’s yards.
The authority have also asked importers to redirect Dhaka Rail Inland Container Depot-bound containers to a private box terminal near the capital by waterways.
The measures are a bid to reduce the number of containers in Chittagong port yard, which …

Drop in box shipping contract rates points to ‘a recession of seismic proportions’

Long-term container shipping contracts have registered their first pricing decline since last October, prompting fears that the industry is heading towards “a recession of seismic proportions”.
According to figures published today by Xeneta, its crowd-sourced freight rate benchmarking platform XSI Public Indices saw a 0.5% decline in long-term contracted rates this month, following “a sustained period of growth”.
Year on year, the XSI was up 5.8% on March 2019 and up 2.2% …

Congestion looms at US ports as shops and factories close and imports pile up

The repercussions of Covid-19 have begun to hit US imports.
As retail outlets, as well as many manufacturing operations, in North America are shuttered, anticipation of a surge of imports to compensate for China’s extended lunar new year hiatus are quickly disappearing.
Instead, as more containers arrive, there are concerns about mounting storage costs.
US importers have not wasted time in shifting gear – having tried to speed-up deliveries from China a few …

Bangladesh’s key seaport, Chittagong, is facing heavy congestion in its yard as a government-decreed national holiday restricts the flow of goods.
The government has declared a 10-day general holiday between 26 March and 4 April, barred people from going outside from home and halted all types of commercial activities except emergency services.
Chittagong is continuing operations amid the virtual lockdown in an attempt to avoid vessel congestion and the creation of a …

Chittagong depots won’t handle boxes from non-payers Maersk and OOCL

The off-docks at Chittagong have stopped handling the containers of Maersk Line, OOCL and Gold Star Line, as part of a dispute over fees.
Since Wednesday morning, the depots have provided no service to these shipping lines, which have a 20%-25% market share in transporting export cargo.
In January, the depots raised fees by nearly 22%, a rise the shipping lines did not accept and they have paid no bills since then, …

Retailers now believe sea-air the best way to get their goods out of China

Major retailers awaiting their spring-summer stock are planning to opt for sea-air to get their goods out of China.
The garment industry wants its new season launches into shops before Easter, in eight weeks’ time, but “some 70% to 80% of Chinese factories are still not back up to speed,” said Grant Liddell, business development director for Metro Shipping.
“So there will be at least another week’s delay in production, and a lot …

In the case of the apparel and clothing vertical, there is a double whammy – not only is China the largest garment producer in the world, it is also one of the most important material sourcing locations, and both channels are likely to see substantial production delays, reports Quartz. “China is …
