Bunker quality issues arise by alleged off-specification or contaminated bunkers

The UK Club reported that they see several bunker quality issues from delivery of alleged off-specification or contaminated bunkers. In many of these cases fuel sampling procedures on board at the time of delivery have been found inadequate and in many cases unreliable.

In essence, the Club highlights that continuous drip sampling throughout bunkering operations should be used for both Commercial and MARPOL Samples and should be carried out at a single mutually agreeable and monitored location.

AMSA reminds of the sulphur carriage ban, beginning March

The Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) reminds members and interested parties that from March 1st, 2020, all vessels are prohibited from carrying fuel oil with a sulphur content greater than 0.50% m/m.

Italian refiner’s VLSFO sales top 120,000 tonnes

The Italian refiner Saras launched its very low sulphur fuel oil (VLSFO) in early September, with its sails now having topped 120,000 tonnes, following the implementation of IMO’s 2020 sulphur cap regulation.

MPA: majority of Singapore’s suppliers have VLSFO available

According to the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) 29 out of 45 Singapore’s licensed bunker suppliers, have readily available 0.50% sulphur fuel oil, with all expect two having IMO 2020-compliant marine gasoil (MGO). India experiences lack of 2020-compliant fuel

Shipowners should be cautious during HSFO de-bunkering amid regulations

As the 2020 sulphur cap came into force on the 1st of January 2020, the shipping industry is still challenged by the de-bunkering methods of heavy sulphur fuel oil, with the pressure of flag states which will begin detecting for non-compliant fuel oils.
