Freighter conversions: Boeing or the other guy?

An unpainted Boeing 737-800 with a wider cargo door cut into the side during modification work.

Some car owners will only go to the dealer for maintenance, while others are perfectly happy with an independent mechanic. The same thinking holds true in aviation when used airplanes are turned into freighters.

A Bulgarian air cargo company will soon start transporting packages for an express carrier with a 737-800 newly converted to carry containers instead of passengers after ditching Boeing (NYSE: BA) for a smaller engineering outfit to do the job.

Israel Aerospace Industries has reached a milestone in development of the Boeing 777 passenger-to-freighter conversion program, moving beyond the planning phase to physically modifying the prototype aircraft.

IAI and partner GE Capital Aviation Services, a major leasing company, announced Tuesday that the first extended range 777-300 will officially be inducted into IAI’s Tel Aviv repair facility toward the end of June.

GECAS to lease first 777-300 converted freighters to Kalitta Air

Kalitta Air

GECAS Cargo, a subsidiary of General Electric (NYSE: GE), said Kalitta Air will be the launch customer for its Boeing 777-300 converted freighter program.

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, but GECAS said the planes will be delivered to Kalitta in 2023.

The 777-300ERSF, called the “Big Twin,” will be the largest twin-engine aircraft conversion to cargo service and is viewed as an excellent replacement for the aging four-engine 747 freighters.

DHL prepares three 767 passenger planes for freight operations

German express carrier DHL has contracted with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) to convert three Boeing 767-300 passenger planes to all-cargo configuration.

The contract, which IAI stated is valued in the “tens of millions of dollars,” also includes an option for DHL to have IAI convert a fourth 767-300 to freighter service.

IAI spun off its commercial aviation group in 2019, although the Tel Aviv-based company has been converting Boeing passenger planes to freighters for years.

GECAS readies 777-300 freighter conversion program

GE Capital Aviation Services (GECAS) said it delivered its first former Boeing 777-300 passenger plane to Israel Aerospace Industries this week for conversion to all-cargo service.

The GECAS-owned aircraft, which was flown from Dubai to Tel Aviv airport, was initially part of Emirates’ passenger service.

Converting the 2005-built aircraft to a freighter will require extensive work, including the addition of a main deck cargo door, window plugs, modified crew compartment and a reinforced fuselage.
