Pacific green corridor ports agree partnership strategy

Green corridors first got a lot of attention at the COP26 summit in 2021 when the U.S. signed on to the Clydebank Declaration for Green Shipping Corridors (DGSC). Since then, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the San Pedro Bay ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles have been working on plans for a Pacific green corridor for quite a while.

Today, at COP28 in Dubai, the three port authorities unveiled a partnership strategy for a green and digital shipping corridor across the...

Port of Long Beach narrowly misses record August

While imports declined by more than 5%, progress moving empty containers off the docks helped propel the Port of Long Beach to a near-record August.

The Southern California gateway in August moved 806,940 twenty-foot equivalent units, down just 764 TEUs — or 0.1% — from the same month a year ago, which was the port’s busiest August ever.

Imports were down 5.6% to 384,530 TEUs, but exports were up 1.6% to 121,408 TEUs and empty containers moved through the port increased 7.2% to 301,001 TEUs.

Long Beach sets record but East, Gulf Coast ports’ gains bigger

“Cargo continues to move at a record-setting pace and may not slow down anytime soon,” according to Mario Cordero, executive director of the Port of Long Beach.

The port on California’s San Pedro Bay recorded its busiest April ever. Its neighbor, the Port of Los Angeles, had the second-busiest April in its history even though it posted a year-over-year cargo volume decrease. But the strongest performances in April took place at ports on the Gulf and East coasts.

The Port of Long Beach last month...

Port of Los Angeles completes best first quarter in its history

The Port of Los Angeles (POLA) has handled 958,674 TEU in March, which is its third consecutive monthly cargo record, while the port completed its best first quarter ever, tracking 3.5% above last year’s record.

“With improved fluidity on our docks and fewer vessels waiting to enter the port, our terminals are processing cargo at record levels. Yet we’re not taking anything for granted. We’re using our Port Optimizer data to find developing issues and adjust to market demands,” commented POLA...

Viewpoint: Purse strings are frayed — and US trade is held hostage

The inverse relationship between the price tag of trade and overall service continues to be upside down — and don’t expect that trend to change anytime soon.

Despite the rhetoric, the historic amount of imports from Asia is canceling any reported “success” of long-dwelling containers being moved out of the Port of Los Angeles. Executive Director Gene Seroka tells American Shipper that the port’s land capacity remains at 100%. Ideally, that percentage should be in the 70s for efficient container...
