Peak season is upon us — what’s different this year?

Peak season isn’t what it used to be.

For decades, retailers had an idea of what to expect around the holidays: a short but massive plateau in volume and supply chains that (for the most part) were expected to run smoothly.

When COVID-19 hit, it changed everything. Peak season got even longer, demand got even stronger and supply chains were thrown completely out of whack.

But even in the new normal of peak season, there will always be some nuances from year to year, and 2022 is no different.

One...

Returns are causing a holiday hangover for retailers

Breaking down holiday returns data reveals a potential headache for retailers

On Monday, millions of Americans celebrated Valentine’s Day, but retailers were still celebrating Christmas.

While the winter holiday season ended over a month ago for consumers, retailers are still in the thick of it, contending with a mountain of product returns the likes of which they’ve never seen. According to a report from the National Retail Federation, U.S. consumers will return about $158 billion worth of goods purchased between Nov. 1 and Dec. 24. That’s more than a 56% increase...

Return to sender: Holiday product returns will stress supply chains

Breaking down the costly process of returning a product

Much ado has been made about holiday sales, and for good reason –– this holiday season figures to be unlike any other as supply chain disruptions continue to complicate the path from retailer to consumer. But not enough emphasis is being placed on the other direction: returns.

The reverse journey from the consumer back to the retailer is arguably an even more arduous one, and it’s compounded by the fact that those returned products occupy the same supply chains as unsold products. With supply...

Shipping and supply chain delays are at the forefront of retailers’ worries this peak season. Companies with holiday goods that arrive after the season or get large amounts of returns have three major options: store them in warehouses until next year, throw them away or sell them on the secondary market.

FreightWaves asked an expert how retailers can sell their seasonal returns, overstock and late inventory.

Howard Rosenberg is the founder and CEO of B-Stock Solutions, which offers retailers a...

Black Friday is going to be boring this year

Black Friday will be boring this year as supply chain disruptions spread out deals and discounts

Black Friday used to be a welcome mat for the holidays. It was almost a holiday in itself, with families waking up early in the morning rife with excitement to join the gaggles of other holiday shoppers as they explored endless aisles of holiday gifts and goodies.

But not anymore.

Black Friday is no longer an event –– it’s a concept that’s becoming more and more amorphous every year.

“Black Friday isn’t actually a day,” Deb Gabor, CEO of Sol Marketing, told Modern Shipper. “Black Friday is, at...

FedEx forecast calls for holiday package shipments to increase 10%

Holiday shipments moving higher amid supply chain bottlenecks

FedEx is expecting package deliveries to increase 10% year-over-year during the holiday shipping season, a spokesperson told FreightWaves on Friday.

The expected increase would easily surpass last year’s peak season record. But this year FedEx (NYSE: FDX) won’t have to contend with the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines, which were rushed to frontline workers in the early days of December 2020.

Even with numerous supply chain snarls keeping freight stuck at ports and shipper warehouses longer,...
