Louis Dreyfus Armateurs plans to develop LH2-fueled SOV

As well as providing the fleet that ships aircraft components for Airbus, France’s Louis Dreyfus Armateurs (LDA) is also active in offshore wind support. Today it revealed, that, in collaboration with Norway’s Salt Ship Design, it has been developing a liquid hydrogen (LH2) fueled SOV (service operation vessel) concept.

LDA and Salt Ship Design teams have been working on the fully LH2 fueled SOV concept with key stakeholders including main equipment suppliers, class and flag authorities, and...

HAV Hydrogen is to build its first full-size prototype Zero Emission Pod

HAV Hydrogen, a subsidiary of Norway’s HAV Group ASA, has received NOK 12.4 million (about $1.2 million) in funding from Innovation Norway’s Environmental Technology Scheme to build, test and certify a full-scale prototype of its Zero Emission Pod – a containerized hydrogen (H2) energy system for ships.

The Zero Emission Pod received Approval in Principle (AiP) from DNV last year. It is a complete deck house in which several hydrogen fuel cells are mounted together with a complete hydrogen...

World’s first hydrogen-fueled tug features Schottel propulsion

HydroTug drive system

Launched earlier this year by Spanish shipbuilder Astilleros Amon, the world’s first hydrogen-fueled tug, the HydroTug, will be among the cleanest vessels in the fleet of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium when it goes to work in early 2023.

With the HydroTug, the Port of Antwerp-Bruges is making an important step in the transition to a sustainable, CO2-neutral port,” says Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO at Port of Antwerp-Bruges.”The port is systematically pursuing a policy of making its entire...

MAN Engines introduces first hydrogen dual fuel engine for workboats

Engine room of vessel with hydrogen dual fuel engine

MAN Engines reports that it has put its first two dual fuel hydrogen-powered engines for work boats into serial operation. The two twelve-cylinder MAN D2862 LE448, diesel engine each have an output of 749 kW (1,019 hp) at 2,100 rpm.

The low-emission engines will be used in the world’s first hydrogen-powered crew transfer vessel (CTV), the Hydrocat 48 operated by Windcat Workboats, which is owned by Compagnie Maritime Belge (CMB), long an advocate of hydrogen as a marine fuel.

The engines are IMO...

World’s first hydrogen-fueled tugboat launched

Hydrotug in the water

Demonstrating that fuel cells are not the only way to use hydrogen is a marine fuel, the world’s first hydrogen-powered tugboat, the Hydrotug, was launched at the Navia, Spain, shipyard of Astilleros Armón on May 16.

The 65-tons bollard pull vessel is powered by two BeHydro hydrogen dual-fuel medium speed V12 engines and is being built for the Port of Antwerp-Bruges and CMB Tech, an offshoot of Compagnie Maritime Belge (CMB). The BeHydro engine is a joint venture between CMB and engine...

Hydrogen fuel: clean, plentiful… and not ready

Pictured: wind turbines on small islands. Green hydrogen can be collected if water is split using electricity generated from clean power sources, such as wind power. Photo credit: Mary Ray via Unsplash.

There’s a lot of excitement at the moment about the possibility of the elemental gas hydrogen being used as a fuel. And it’s easy to see why. Hydrogen is potentially one of the best fuels around.

Kilogram for kilogram, hydrogen is the king of energy content with a whopping 2.6 times more energy...

EMSA commissions studies on alternative fuels and technologies

A series of studies commissioned by the European Maritime Safety Agency aims to provide decision makers and stakeholders with an updated and thorough overview of the potential of different sources of power for ships, including a review of the risks associated with their use, an analysis of the regulatory gaps, as well as an economic appraisal of the costs for retrofitting existing ships or building new ones.

EMSA has awarded the contract for studies to a consortium led by ABS, along with CE...

VIDEO: Maersk and DFDS join partnership aiming for industrial-scale sustainable fuel production

Shipowners A.P. Moller – Maersk and DFDS have joined a Danish partnership that plans to develop an industrial-scale production facility in the Copenhagen area to produce sustainable fuels for maritime, road and air transportation. The other project partners include Copenhagen Airports, DSV Panalpina, SAS and Ørsted.

“Decarbonizing the transport sector is a significant and complex task that requires collaborative contributions from every company, organization, and country,” says Søren Skou, CEO,...

Two-thirds of shipowners have no decarbonization strategy, survey finds

Shipowners see ammonia and hydrogen as the most attractive fuel options for the long term, according to an ABS survey. Nearly 60 per cent of respondents said they viewed hydrogen and ammonia as the most attractive fuel choices in the long-term. However, the survey also indicated that nearly two thirds of owners currently have no decarbonization strategy in place.

The survey covered shipowners and operators registering for an ABS webinar, Pathways to Sustainable Shipping.

When asked which fuel is...
