California trucking’s AB5 options get a hearing at IANA; brokerage on top?

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Marc Blubaugh, the lead transportation attorney at the Benesch law firm, looked out over easily more than 1,000 people gathered for the annual meeting of the Intermodal Association for North America and told them something they might not have wanted to hear about California’s AB5 independent contractor law.

“If you came into this session thinking you’re going to hear the bulletproof compliance model, you’re going to be disappointed,” Blubaugh said.

Transport, logistics tread lightly as in-person conferences plot return

Through the winter and well into the spring, organizers of the North American Commercial Vehicle (NACV) show, the trucking industry’s largest, gave every indication it would return to the in-person stage in late September at Atlanta’s cavernous Georgia World Congress Center. That was until May 4, when Hannover Fairs USA and Newcom Media, the show’s co-organizers, canceled the event, citing a reluctance of truckers to travel and congregate indoors with more than 5,000 participants.

The show will...

Management ‘by surprise’

Did you know that the U.S. rail industry had a chance to be the freight industry leader in offering customers a robust cargo tracking and shipment exception service?

Yes. Between 1992 and 1994, three of the largest Class I railroads were united with American President Lines and Amtech Logistics Corp. in a venture to capture car movement data and package it for their customers’ supply chain management needs. It would have provided “freight car location messaging” (CLM in railroading terminology)...

FMCSA approves ‘performance-based’ chassis inspection training

Intermodal Association of America

The U.S. Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMSCA) this week approved an industry association’s application that will allow container chassis mechanics to qualify more efficiently to become equipment or brake inspectors.

The Intermodal Association of North America (IANA) requested the FMSCA exemption to implement the chassis inspection training through a “performance-based” approach rather than time-based as prescribed by the federal government.

The association’s training program is...
