The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore has set up a maritime single window (MSW) platform for the Port of Lobito in Angola.

Delegates from Angola and a representative of IMO were able to test the platform at a business process study workshop in Singapore (27-30 June) as part of the Single Window for Facilitation of Trade (SWiFT) project.

Community action will pave the way to a secure future, says the IMO

Digital, medical and technological communities working in harmony will drive societies forward. These partnerships will offer the world brighter prospects. If the pandemic has taught us anything it is that acting alone is futile. Collaboration will provide a path to develop the digital tools necessary to defeat this and future pandemics and to develop a decarbonised, cleaner future, writes the secretary general of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Kitack Lim.

We cannot shy away from...

Is the maritime sector out of step?

Global warming is a ticking time-bomb that could destroy us all or it could be a dud, failing to explode at the expected time. For most climate change must be dealt with and in shipping that is the general view, but the route to climate redemption remains unclear, as was clearly understood at this week’s debate at the IMO. Container News’ Nick Savvides argues that the industry may, as a result, have missed an important opportunity.

Time is a wonderous thing, timing is, apparently everything, at...

IMO GHG strategy a triumph of “sweat and solidarity” says secretary general

The approval of short-term measures to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by the delegates at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) reflects the collective commitment to reduce carbon emissions yesterday.

Secretary general Kitack Lim said the agreement to amend Annex VI of the Maritime Pollution (MARPOL) convention was a long challenging discussion that is in keeping with the IMO’s Initial Strategy for decarbonisation agreed in 2018.

Lim acknowledged that the discussions had not been...

Early skirmishes in IMO GHG debate from SIDS

Much of the damage from global warming will be first felt by the small island developing states, known as SIDS, but the early indications are that the island countries are divided in their support for the short-term greenhouse gas (GHG) measures thrashed out by the Intersessional Working Group in mid-October.

The Solomon and Marshall Islands have produced a paper for the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) 75 that explains their position, claiming that the proposals from October’s...

Kitack Lim opens MEPC 75 virtual meeting

International Maritime Organization (IMO) secretary general Kitack Lim opened today’s Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC) 75 by highlighting the importance of moving the greenhouse gas (GHG) debate on in spite of the slimmed down agenda for the meeting.

MEPC 75 will take place online due to the pandemic and as a result of this shortened meeting, at only three hours deliberation per day, the pressure to debate the critical issues around GHG emissions from ships.

“It is of utmost...
