According to two change of operations requests, less-than-truckload carrier Yellow Corp. has begun the process of consolidating terminals in its Western network. The company seeks to consolidate 20 YRC Freight and Reddaway facilities and close nine.

An accompanying letter to the Teamsters and its negotiating group is asking for a hearing “on or about June 13” with implementation not taking place until July 17 at the earliest. Yellow provided the notification in accordance with National Master...

FreightWaves Classics/Fallen Flags: P.I.E. could not adapt to deregulation

There are many people interested in former transportation companies, whether they were trucking companies, railroads, airlines or ocean lines. These companies are called “fallen flags,” and the term describes companies whose corporate names have been dissolved through merger, bankruptcy or liquidation.

Today’s FreightWaves Classics profiles another fallen flag in the trucking industry – Pacific Intermountain Express, which was known as P.I.E. and P-I-E. Unfortunately, there is not much...

Disgruntled pilots blast 5-year contract with Atlas Air

An Atlas Air jumbo cargo jet takes off, with front wheel in air. The plane is white, with purple and gold lettering.

Pilots for all-cargo carrier Atlas Air are venting frustration over a new five-year contract imposed under binding arbitration even though analysts say the deal significantly raises pay toward the upper end of peers at comparable carriers. The outcome should provide  labor certainty for Atlas as it tries to meet strong demand for shipping service, but union representatives warn the new benefits package will accelerate attrition rates and jeopardize service.

Initial estimates indicate captains...

FreightWaves Haul of Fame: Roadway Express was an LTL leader for decades

The U.S. trucking industry grew in the years following World War I. Nonetheless, the industry was still in its early days, and railroads were the primary method of transportation for goods from point of manufacture to point of sale.

Early history

This did not deter brothers Carroll and Galen Roush, who founded Roadway Express in Akron, Ohio in 1930. Roadway Express entered the trucking industry as a less-than-truckload (LTL) carrier; its first load was transporting tires between Akron and St....

Teamsters protest in SoCal gets burst of support from longshoremen

What had been deemed a strike in Southern California by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters — but was undertaken by people who were not employed — does appear to have disrupted some port operations in the Los Angeles/Long Beach port area Wednesday, albeit briefly.

Just how much of a disruption is a point of some contention. What is clear is that a protest by workers fired from divisions of Universal Logistics (NASDAQ: ULH)  late last year, soon after some of them had voted to unionize,...

By the mid-1930s, L.R. Strickland had been involved in the trucking industry for several years. He had worked for Sproles Transportation & Storage, based in Dallas, Texas, as well as West Texas Express. His experience in the trucking industry gave him the insight and knowledge that generated Strickland Transportation its early successes.

Early history

Strickland Transportation Co., Inc.’s journey began when Strickland purchased an interest in Jackson Freight Lines, which operated on routes from...

Dismissed workers at Universal Logistics in SoCal mount protest to get jobs back

The Teamsters are calling it a strike, but an action at a Universal Logistics (NASDAQ: ULH) facility in Compton, California, Monday is more of a protest by workers who want their job back.

Though the protest was small, it’s another battle in the ongoing California labor wars, where the intersection of Teamster efforts to unionize and issues of driver classification all come together. Looming in the background at all times are California’s regulations dealing with the issue of worker...

FreightWaves Haul of Fame: Consolidated Freightways was an industry leader for many years

The early years

Consolidated Freightways, also known as CF, was founded in 1929 by Leland James in Portland, Oregon. James combined four short-haul companies located in Portland into one trucking firm. Once these companies were combined, James focused on expanding their reach. At the time, trucking in the West was a fledgling industry. The lack of industrial expansion to the West at this point made any sort of progress difficult to achieve. Because of this, James focused primarily on...

Small group of workers vote to decertify Teamsters in California

The International Brotherhood of Teamsters might agree with the adage that “bad things happen in threes.”

For the third time in recent weeks, the union has been decertified at a transportation-related company. The vote was for a small group of workers, just 20. The employer is Harbor Distributing LLC, which the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) report on the vote says does business as Allied Central Coast Distributing. It is located in Santa Maria, California.

The vote was narrow, according...

NLRB files action against Universal Logistics over Teamsters vote fallout at SoCal facility

Several subsidiaries of Universal Logistics (NASDAQ: ULH) are the target of a complaint filed by the National Labor Relations Board against some of Universal’s activities in California, as the board has rounded up a series of earlier charges filed by the Teamsters into one action.

Some of the complaints filed by the Teamsters go back as far as 2019. That was the year workers at  the Compton facility of Universal Logistics voted to be represented by the Teamsters.

The earlier NLRB complaints...
