Las tarifas de transporte de contenedores no caen en picado, sino que descienden “ordenadamente

A photo of a container ship; rates remain high

No precipitous plunge in container shipping rates, just ‘orderly’ decline

A photo of a container ship; rates remain high

There’s an old Greek shipping saying that goes: “Ninety-eight tankers and 101 cargoes, boom. Ninety-eight cargoes and 101 tankers, bust.” This doesn’t translate so well into modern-day container shipping because the consolidated liner sector manages the number of ships in service a lot better than the fragmented tanker business.

Tanker spot rates can plunge violently lower when supply exceeds demand. One of the big questions for container shipping has been: Will spot rates plunge precipitously...

Kuehne+Nagel Q2 profits rise 78% on lower shipping volumes

Kuehne + Nagel sign on building

Second-quarter earnings for Kuehne + Nagel, the world’s second-largest logistics provider, underscore how supply chain disruptions that hurt the bottom line of goods’ owners can drive profits as customers seek extra help navigating shipping complexity and uncertainty.

Elevated yields continue to exceed exceptionally high freight transportation and warehousing costs, pushing up revenue 45% to 10.4 billion Swiss francs ($10.9 billion) and operating profit 78% to $1.1 billion versus the 2021 June...

A federal judge has ruled a $1.7 million shipping dispute between Kuehne + Nagel, the world’s largest air freight logistics provider, and oil field services giant Baker Hughes must be arbitrated, saying that the contract’s arbitration clause is enforceable under New York law.

Houston-based Baker Hughes sued for compensation after one of its shipments was seized by Brazilian customs authorities because the airline providing the physical transportation failed to provide proof of a pre departure...

Despite rising risks, shipping lines on track for another record year

container shipping lines

The year is almost a third over, and with each passing month, shipping lines look increasingly likely to pocket even more cash in 2022 than in record-trouncing 2021.

New data and commentary released Tuesday by ocean carrier Maersk, freight forwarder Kuehne+Nagel and consultancy Drewry highlight just how profitable this year is shaping up to be for ocean carriers — and how expensive it’s looking for importers.

Drewry’s baseline forecast now calls for ocean carriers as a group to earn $300...

Viewpoint: Keep an eye on Shanghai

The latest disruption indicators show no matter how targeted a “zero-COVID” measure is in China, there are impacts to the flow of trade. The latest disruption indicator from Kuehne + Nagel dismisses the downplaying bluster and the claims that the Yantian port was “operating normally.”

Port productivity hinges more on vessels. Otto Schacht, EVP of sea logistics at Kuehne + Nagel, tells American Shipper the disruption he posted on his LinkedIn post “is the effect of the partial lockdown in...

Russia-Ukraine developments: Commodity diesel prices take a breather

Consumers of diesel fuel got a rare respite, at least in the commodity markets, when the price of ultra low sulfur diesel (ULSD) rose only slightly Thursday.

After three days in which the price of ULSD on the CME commodity exchange rose more than 64 cents a gallon, ULSD Thursday rose just 0.87 cents to $3.5034 a gallon. It had been as high as more than $3.84 per gallon earlier in the day.

The general consensus in the market is that prices pulled back because of growing signs that negotiators in...

Kuehne + Nagel 2021 earnings swell on 50% air, ocean margins

A blue and white Kuehne + Nagel truck in front of loading docks.

Kuehne + Nagel, the world’s largest air and sea freight forwarder by volume, was richly rewarded last year by supply chain disruptions, elevated rates and its ability to steer customer shipments through the chaos, culminating with a 300% fourth-quarter rise in operating income to $1.2 billion.

The company also announced Wednesday that it has suspended all import shipments into Russia, except for pharmaceuticals, health care and humanitarian supplies.

On a full-year basis, earnings before interest...
