Government package of measures welcomed but they don’t go far enough

The Secretary of State for Transport has today laid out the initial government response to the disgraceful decision by P&O Ferries to dismiss 800 seafarers without notice or consultation.

The government’s ‘package of measures’ – nine proposals in all – have been focussed on the extension of the national minimum wage to all seafarers onboard ferries that enter UK ports. Nautilus welcomes these proposals, indeed, we have been calling for this for many years. However, intervention on the national...

RMT respond to Shapps P&O statement

Mick Lynch – RMT General Secretary said:

“Despite all the bluster, Grant Shapps has failed to grasp the opportunity to adequately stand up to the banditry behaviour of P&O.

“The Prime Minister repeatedly said to parliament that the Government would be taking legal action save British seafarers’ jobs but he has failed to keep his word.

“This continued lack of action and courage has meant a ferry company owned by the Dubai royal family has been able to break our laws and disrupt our ports and ruin...

P & O Ferries

“The ferry sector has faced huge challenges during the pandemic and we understand that P & O Ferries faced an incredibly difficult commercial situation. The Chamber does not condone how P &O Ferries dismissed 800 seafarers without consultation.

Following this afternoons announcement by the Secretary of State we are working closely with the Department for Transport, our members and other stakeholders to create a commercially viable UK model for our international ferry services. We must establish...

MPC expresses concern over situation at P&O Ferries

The Maritime Professional Council (MPC) of the UK notes with concern the termination of the employment of 800 UK seafarers employed by P&O Ferries and the detrimental impact this has had on the reputation of the industry as a whole.

The MPC wishes to highlight the blow the loss of these seagoing posts will have on the ongoing efforts to increase the number of UK seafarers and maintain Britain’s position as a significant maritime nation. At a stroke it undermines the UK Maritime Strategy.

While...

RMT on detention by MCA of Pride of kent tonight

Mick Lynch

RMT tonight welcomed the MCA detention of another P&O vessel the Pride of Kent in Dover for what the union believes are multiple safety and operational breaches, including the wearing of breathing apparatus, and demanded again that the Government seize the entire fleet and take action to get them back in service with the sacked crew reinstated.

‎General Secretary Mick Lynch said;

“The seizing of the Pride of Kent by the MCA this evening should be adequate evidence for the Government...
