P&O launches Tilbury-Calais service to beat Dover congestion

Brexit contingency measures continue to build within the UK’s supply chain with P&O announcing a new Tilbury-Calais ferry service.
P&O’s chief executive Janette Bell said she was “delighted” with the launch, adding that the route would “strengthen” the company’s positions and provide access to a port 25 miles from London.
“The route saves up to 75 road miles compared with the traditional Calais-Dover crossing, meaning that our customers save on fuel and land on the …

Post-Brexit VAT on overseas parcels would be a ‘no-deal stealth tax’

Further scrutiny is being heaped on the UK government’s Brexit strategy with claims of a “no-deal stealth tax” and calls for special economic status for freight gateways.
Head of consumer research at Parcelhero David Jinks has slammed the government’s £900m ‘Get Ready for Brexit’ campaign, claiming it provides business with “little new information”.
He added: “But it does reveal that the £15 VAT threshold on overseas parcels would be quietly scrapped, should there still be …

FMC set to review ‘costly and unfair’ demurrage and detention fees

The US Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) is backing proposals aimed at reforming how demurrage and detention fees are levied by ocean carriers on shippers.
The main change would be that charges be suspended in cases when shippers and their 3PLs are prevented from moving cargo out of terminals by factors beyond their control.
Following an 18-month investigation into the topic by FMC commissioner Rebecca Dye, the FMC announced on Friday it had …
