Port of LA talks to Toll on new warehouse after labour strife

NFI-owned Cal Cartage’s facility at the port of Los Angeles is set to close after five decades, following scrutiny over employment practices. The decision by the California port has received widespread praise from both the Teamsters union and a city councilman. Furthermore, it appears the port is already in negotiations with Australia’s Toll Global Forwarding over a lease for the site in Wilmington. In September, LA’s city council voted to …

Local politicians may have applauded the decision, but a Flanders transparency watchdog is calling on chemical company Ineos to disclose documents showing how the construction of two chemical plants at the Port of Antwerp  – which engaged in a battle with the port of Rotterdam for the deal – can be built without impinging on Belgium’s climate change commitments. Brexit sails from one storm in a port to another: want to talk about it?

The decision by the UK’s Department for Transport earlier this week to cancel the contracts awarded to DFDS and Brittany Ferries to run a series of extra cross-channel ro-ro sailings after 29 March – the date the UK was due to leave the EU – brings to an end another sorry, chaotic chapter in a story depressingly full of them.
The original strategy of the government in securing some extra vessel …

New packaging for lithium-ion batteries means safer transport – but not by air, yet

The automotive industry will be able to transport lithium-ion batteries in a safer and more sustainable way following the launch of new re-usable packaging.
Developed by Chep, with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), the packaging will help prevent fires, one of the biggest problems in the transport of lithium-ion batteries.
However, the new solution is not economically suited to the small volumes of batteries permitted to be carried by air, instead it’s designed for larger …

Supply chain radar: The benchmark implications of the Long Beach Container Terminal sale

The sale of state-of-the-art Long Beach Container Terminal (LBCT) by OOCL to a consortium led by Australia’s Macquarie Infrastructure Partners (MIP) eventually gives us a benchmark in terms of valuation for such assets, putting to rest the speculation that LBCT could have either fetched a stellar valuation (over $2bn) for the seller or a bargain deal (around $1bn) for the buyer.
In short, the price seems fair, and negotiations did not drag unnecessarily. …

CH Robinson reports growth in surface transport, but air freight volumes fall

CH Robinson issued a strong, if dull (and sometimes inaccurate), set of results yesterday, showing growth in its key North American Surface Transportation (NAST) division.
While total revenues fell 4.4% to $3.8bn, net revenues rose 8.4% to $678.8m, while income from operations went up 17.2% to $224.6m. Cashflow increased 28% to $256.9m.
NAST saw revenue fall, driven, it said, by decreased pricing, but enjoyed net revenue up 11% to $486m, while income …
