Austal USA, Mobile, Ala., hosted future USS Santa Barbara ship sponsor and keel authenticator, Lolita Zinke, recently at a keel laying ceremony for the 16th Independence variant Littoral Combat Ship (LCS). Zinke welded her initials into the ship’s keel plate officially authenticating that the keel of the future USS Santa Barbara (LCS 32) “has been truly and fairly laid”.

Eastern Shipbuilding lays keel for new trailing suction hopper dredge

Eastern Shipbuilding Group, Panama City, Fla., announced that on, Sept. 11, 2020, Eastern conducted the keel laying for 356’x79’6″x27’3″ R.B. Weeks, ESG hull 258, a new trailing suction hopper dredger for Weeks Marine Inc. (WMI), Covington, La., following the contract signing five months earlier.

Bay Shipbuilding lays keel for new LNG bunker barge

Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding and Polaris New Energy hosted a private ceremonial keel laying in late June, celebrating the start of construction of an LNG (liquefied natural gas) bunker barge. The 340’x66’x32’10” barge will be named the Clean Canaveral and will operate as an articulated tug and barge unit that initially runs along the U.S. East Coast, providing LNG bunkering solutions to NorthStar Midstream’s customers.

Gulf Island Shipyards begins building Rhode Island research vessel

Construction officially began yesterday in Houma, La., on the 199′ research vessel Resolution, a new research ship being built at Gulf Island Shipyards and bound for the University of Rhode Island. The Regional Class Research Vessel (RCRV) will support such scientific studies as the tracking of ocean currents, ocean-atmosphere interactions, climate-induced changes in the oceans, fish migration, seafloor surveys, conservation of marine mammals and the food-web dynamics in the deep ocean.
