Supply chain radar: Here’s why OOCL’s growth rate sends a mixed signal to all box liners

The devil is not in the detail with OOCL, the container line arm under the Orient Overseas International Lines umbrella ultimately controlled by Cosco Shipping. As usual at this stage of “disclosure”, none has been made – so, to unearth any meaningful information was virtually mission impossible.
But some headline numbers had the dwindling bulls banging on with much fanfare about best-case scenarios for all the others. Is that desperation we …

OOCL has released it 2019 fourth-quarter operational results, showing volume gains on all its trades except the transpacific, which took a hit from the tariff-related downturn.
Moreover, OOCL’s traditional pre-cursor to the quarterly financial results season would appear to bode well for the earnings of its peers, to be published in the coming weeks.

Bangladesh shippers hard hit by low-sulphur bunker fuel surcharges

Shippers in Bangladesh sending a 40ft container from Chittagong to the deepsea transhipment hubs of Colombo and Singapore must pay a $100 per  box bunker adjustment factor (BAF) low-sulphur surcharge.
“Some operators have been collecting the surcharge since December and some in January to adjust the fuel oil price hike,” said Iqbal Hassan, general manager of local ship agency and customs brokerage QC Shipping.
He added that from Chittagong to Europe and the …

Box manufacturers issue profit warnings as soft demand forces prices down

Prices of new containers dropped dramatically last year, forcing major box manufacturers to issue recent profit warnings to investors.
In separate announcements to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, the two largest manufacturers, China International Marine Containers (CIMC) and Singamas, warned investors that low demand for new boxes, combined with oversupply of equipment, had forced then to reassess their financial performance for the past year.
Singamas now expects a US$95m loss for 2019, …

Market Insight Q&A: Steve Walker – ‘Can we trust carriers’ blockchain promises?’

I have had the pleasure of talking to veteran freight forwarder Steve Walker (pictured above), trying to catch up from where we left it last summer on the hot topic of data treatment, ownership and disclosure for the main supply chain players, with a particular focus on the conflict between the air and ocean freight forwarders and the carriers.
Some six months on, here is an excerpt of a few key …

Hamburg denies it will lose volumes in shipping alliance network shifts

The German container gateway of Hamburg won’t see a drop in throughput after the shipping alliance network reshuffles scheduled for 1 April, it was claimed today.
While the recently published east-west schedule for the Ocean Alliance was largely unchanged, a Hamburg call on its Asia-North Europe NEU5/FAL3 service will be swtched to Antwerp, raising fears that the German hub could lose up to 150,000 teu per year.
However, Axel Mattern, joint chief …
