Whitehall backs move to bring distributed ledger technology to UK ports

A UK government-backed initiative to foster digital innovation across industry is looking to demonstrate the benefits of distributed ledger technology (DLT) in the shipping sector by 2020.
Last month’s budget renewed five-year funding for Digital Catapult, which provides physical and digital facilities for technology testing and seeks to foster industry collaboration.
As part of its ambitions, Digital Catapult has launched DLT field labs, working with businesses, investors and regulators in a...

2020 low sulphur regulations could be ‘the saviour’ of container shipping

The IMO’s 0.5% sulphur cap, to be imposed in January 2020, could be a “blessing in disguise” for shipping lines, should the regulatory fallout finally end the industry’s elusive search for supply and demand balance.
However, any benefits will not materialise without short-term pain, according to analysts speaking today at the Asia Logistics & Maritime Conference in Hong Kong.
“IMO 2020 could be very helpful in terms of supply,” said McKinsey & …

MSC and Maersk clash on capacity policy as AE2/Swan loop readies for relaunch

The 2M is “unlikely” to suspend its AE2/Swan Asia-North Europe loop again after the Chinese New Year, according to an MSC source.
The insider told The Loadstar today MSC “had no intention of making the same mistake again”.
The source was referring to the 2M’s decision to suspend a service in October and November, rather than blank sailings, to balance supply and demand.
Maersk Line and MSC decided to “temporarily suspend” the AE2/Swan service …

The downside for carriers and terminals of a digital supply chain

While every shipping company in the world appears to be developing some form of digital strategy, a leading industry academic has warned that digitisation could result in some unforeseen and unwelcome consequences.
Speaking at last week’s TOC Americas Supply Chain Conference in Panama, Jean-Paul Rodrigue, from the department of global studies and geography at New York’s Hofstra University, argued: “Digitisation could be a really bad thing for the shipping industry, but perhaps …

Drewry sides with those wanting extension to block exemption for joint liner services

Drewry has waded into the debate over the European Commission’s consultation on the block exemption afforded to container lines serving the EU, which is due to expire in April 2020.
The consultant said it could see “validity in both points of view” – those for an extension of the block exemption, and those against – but said shippers should “not fear alliances”, which, it contended, had actually “aided competition during a …

We’re not replacing forwarders, says AF-KLM as it unveils online booking platform

The digitisation of freight booking will not relegate forwarders to history, claimed Air France-KLM, as it launched an online booking tool last week
The carrier unveiled its application programme interface (API), part of a three-year process to overhaul the carriers’ legacy systems, some of which have been in use since the 1980s.
While admitting the API system is “by no means unique”, vice president customer services Robert Kunen told The Loadstar he …

Analysis: just where, and on whom, will APMM’s M&A gaze settle?

The corporate story of AP Møller-Maersk Group (APMM) is incredibly fascinating. It is worth watching as it unfolds daily and trying to figure out what could be next – not only for the Danish carrier, but also for its freight forwarding arm, Damco.
APMM’s ties in the US may become increasingly strong now, after a few trade sources openly speculated about CH Robinson as a possible partner. There has also been …
