Forwarders have to turn away large new customers thanks to capacity squeeze

Some mid-size forwarders are rejecting new larger customers, having been forced to adapt their business model to accommodate the contract ban from Maersk and the reluctance of other shipping lines to offer much capacity.
Maersk’s move to restrict them to its Spot product only is said to have left some “4m teu looking for a new home”, according to one source.
One medium-size forwarder said it was forced to adapt quickly to …

Snapshot: DSV – the ‘M&A value’ evaporates

Value, what value?
As if the week didn’t already get off on the wrong foot for DSV shareholders, with another weekly buyback announcement highlighting the trouble that purchasing stock when the market moves against you can turn out to be…
… there was mild encouragement from the average transaction price sourced from Tab.1 above on Monday: at Dkr1,476 a share, it was (almost perfectly) bang in the middle of the Dkr1,350-1,550 support-resistance …

‘What’s the spread on that?’ Cheers as BIFA Freight Awards go live again

After the madness of the past couple of years, there was an air of euphoria at yesterday’s BIFA Freight Service Awards ceremony in London, when around 500 forwarders were let off the leash to go on the lash.
Routinely held on the third Thursday of January, during what would normally be the beginning of the slack season, the annual BIFA Awards, are often rumbustious affairs, but this year there was a …

Continued maritime liquidity will drive the biggest M&A deals this year

Shipping lines’ “cushy liquidity” helped double M&A deal value in the container port sector last year, with more vertical consolidation on the way in 2022.
According to a new report by Ocean Shipping Consultants (OSC), 2021’s supply chain fragility meant “most logistics companies with spot rate services yielded a solid financial performance”.
The bolstered earnings drove vertical capacity acquisition and triggered an “M&A jostle for supply chain dominance between ports and shipping …

K+N’s ‘new level of data analytics’ will measure supply chain disruption

Kuehne+Nagel has developed a new metric to measure supply chain problems.
The Sea Freight Disruption Indicator will calculate the cumulative waiting time of vessels against their capacity.
The system measures cumulative teu waiting days at various major ports including Los Angeles/Long Beach, Shanghai/Ningbo, Hong Kong, New York, Savannah, Prince Rupert, Vancouver/Seattle, Oakland and Rotterdam/Antwerp.
Under the formula, a vessel with 10,000 teu capacity waiting 12 days to enter a port equates...

Yantian limits intake of export containers amid new year holiday rush

Hutchison Ports says Yantian International Container Terminal (YICT) in southern China lowered the cut-off time for receiving outbound containers since Wednesday, claiming delayed ship arrivals have caused containers to pile up in its yard.
YICT is one of three sub-ports that make up Shenzhen port, the others being Nanshan and Dachan Bay.
Shenzhen is China’s third-busiest container port, after Shanghai and Ningbo-Zhoushan, and the fourth-busiest in the world. In 2020, Shenzhen handled …

Roaring reefer freight rates freezing out perishables from the shelves

The rise and rise of reefer freight rates means fewer choices on supermarket shelves as some perishable products are priced out of the market.
Furthermore, a lack of available containers is creating “tough times” for many reefer shippers and their import partners, according to a reefer market update by DHL Global Forwarding.
It said: “A lot of places in the world at the moment lack reefer equipment. Additionally, dry container rates keep increasing …

Forwarders fear ‘shut-out’ as other major lines emulate Maersk strategy

Increasing numbers of forwarders claim they are being “shut out” by shipping lines that appear to be focusing on very large forwarders and BCOs.
There is suspicion that several European carriers are looking at a similar approach to that of Maersk.
“We’re getting the feeling and feedback from individual sources that this is the case,” one US forwarder executive said.
He said none of the shipping lines had made a clear statement that …
