Port Houston imports up 26% in December

Despite the weighty impact of the coronavirus on U.S. port volumes last spring and summer, Port Houston narrowly missed a record-setting year for container traffic.

During its record 2019, Port Houston handled 2,990,175 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). Thanks to a resurgence of imports that began in late summer, Port Houston moved 2,989,347 TEUs in 2020.

The container influx continued in early winter. December’s volume was up 4% year-over-year, from 253,830 TEUs in 2019 to 264,626 in 2020.

Deutsche Post DHL (OTCMKTS: DPSGY) said Wednesday that 2020 operating profits hit record levels and significantly surpassed its original guidance for the year, as demand for the company’s services surged due to the impact of the novel coronavirus on global ordering behavior and a positive environment for freight services in general.

Commentary: Electronic bills of lading necessary but not sufficient

The views expressed here are solely those of the author and do not necessarily represent the views of FreightWaves or its affiliates.

The Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA), a nonprofit formed in 2019, has been at the forefront of helping the ocean vessel sector pivot from paper to digital documents and improve the scheduling of containerized shipments. Of course, 2020 saw a lot of pivoting due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the surge in e-commerce-related imports. The DCSA has...

New world record set for shipping rates: $350,000 per day

LNG shipping rate ship

It has never been more expensive to get a container of goods across the ocean. But it’s not just containers. Liquified natural gas (LNG) shipping is also rewriting the record books.

Argus reported that BP has just employed the ship LNG Abalamabie for $350,000 per day. That makes it the most expensive vessel charter in maritime history, surpassing the $300,000-per-day peak previously recorded in the very large crude carrier (VLCC) segment.

What’s different about the LNG record — compared to...

Don’t expect rate relief from container-ship order spike

container ship orders

In virtually any ocean shipping market, a big jump in newbuilding orders is a headwind for future freight rates. More capacity spread among competing owners strengthens the negotiating hand of cargo shippers.

According to Alphaliner, container-ship orders spiked in Q4 2020. Orders totaled to 673,500 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), the highest quarterly tally since Q3 2015.

That’s a big jump and cargo shippers may hope for rate relief when those newbuilds eventually hit the water. But they...

According to a Freight Waves article written by their Senior Editor Greg Miller, Analysts have warned that the tanker recovery will be  a distant dream  as rates are unlikely to recover before the second half of the year over crude oil production cut down

“It feels a bit like someone stole our clothes while we were enjoying a swim,” mused the analyst team at Fearnleys. They were quoting a political saying and referring to what just went down in the tanker market.
