Commodity radar: They’ve got an awful lot of coffee (shortage) in Brazil…

At Premium we sometimes muse that our subscription fee is the equivalent of the price of a cup of coffee per week. But after an extraordinary year in the coffee markets, with prices doubling from $1.24/lb to $2.36 today, that comparison no longer stands.
The spotlights were on Brazil in 2021, where frost and drought damaged the coffee crop. The weather story was as dramatic a narrative as any Brazilian soap opera …

Zim puts the geared-up port of Oakland in the fast transpacific lane

Zim is extending its footprint in the fast shipping lane between Asia and North America.
By the end of the month, the carrier intends to start an expedited transpacific service from Taiwan and China to California.
It will deploy vessels with about 4,250 teu capacity on a weekly run from Kaohsiung, via Ningbo and Shanghai, to Oakland and Los Angeles.
And it marks the carrier’s third expedited transpacific operation since the launch of …

More modal shift as shippers and forwarders seek alternatives to costly airfreight

As the prospect of a return to pre-Covid rate levels recedes ever further, relentlessly high airfreight pricing is prompting more and more shippers to look for alternatives.
Forwarders are being tasked to understand their supply chains better and come up with creative solutions.
But they and shippers see no sign of pricing descending from the stratosphere any time soon.
“It will be some time before we return to pre-Covid rate levels,” said Jeff …

A wave of SE Asia e-commerce traffic is moving towards the sea

Ocean freight is set to play a bigger role in south-east Asia’s booming cross-border e-commerce market.
According to regional e-commerce logistics specialist J&T Express, the Covid-crisis has accelerated online spending across the region, with the market on track to reach $153bn in sales by 2025.
This was the prediction before the pandemic hit and, furthermore, with the range of goods bought online widening, J&T predicts more volumes shifting to sea freight.

Skeptics raise doubts as CMA CGM prepares air cargo services for take-off

CMA CGM is hoping to attract a range of competing forwarders to fill its new air fleet, despite concerns over aircraft type and its ownership of Ceva, which looks set to take some 25% of the capacity.
The shipping line announced yesterday that the first of its four A330-200Fs would begin operations on 8 March, from Liege to Chicago, to be operated by Air Belgium.
Ceva is expected to take up to …

Forwarders applaud as Emirates SkyCargo and DP World launch sea-air product

Emirates SkyCargo and DP World have developed a sea-air product together – something forwarders said they “should have done years ago”.
The Dubai-based companies are offering Sea-Air, an express product with a pledge to transfer containers from port to airport in less than 3 hours; Sea-Air Plus, a bespoke solution whereby customers can pick DP World or their own representatives to arrange breakdowns and paperwork; and Sea-Air Flex, which offers shippers …

Container trade ‘madness’ driving more Asia cargo to other modes

The “madness” of ex-Asia container rates is driving more un-boxing of containerised cargo.
And the resulting bounceback for breakbulk is providing a boon for secondary ports and shortsea shipping, according to chartering specialist Ahlers.
“New opportunities are arising for breakbulk, MPVs [multipurpose vessels] and ro-ro carriers,” the company said.
“Alongside some bigger MPVs being chartered for carrying containers, there is an increase in cargo volumes due to more containerised cargo coming...

Breakbulk revival as box shipping prices itself out of the market

Container shipping’s capacity crunch has priced some agricultural and chemical commodities out of the market – in favour of breakbulk.
And the de-containerisation trend could spread to other cargo categories, according to Estonia-based freight forwarder CF&S.
The company recently loaded 700 tons of fertilisers, feed, and chemicals from Xingang to Hamburg in big bags on a multipurpose vessel.
“Due to the huge rise in prices for container sea freight from China to Europe, …

Covid, costly airfreight and box shortages pushing forwarders to LCL options

Sky-high airfreight rates and the global container shortage are driving demand for less-than-container load (LCL) shipping services.
Jan Philipp Harnisch, global COO and Far East Asia CEO at Rhenus Logistics, says the Covid-crisis has also accelerated some logistics trends, including the need for more flexible shipping options.
“With air travel far less frequent and reaching record-high prices, as well as stock quantities fluctuating, LCL gives our clients the flexibility to fill up …

Perishables shippers still facing challenges after switch from air to ocean

Mangoes from Latin America are not traveling by air to international markets this year.
A combination of scarce capacity and high airfreight rates has forced Latin nAmerican mango exporters to shift to ocean transport.
Kurt Schosinsky, MD of Avianca Cargo, says the repercussions of Covid-19 have hit the region’s perishables exporters hard.
For the most part their traffic moves on passenger aircraft, where rates are typically 15-20% lower than for all-cargo planes, said …
