Container shipping laden with ‘antiquated processes’

Until container carriers can agree on a common “business language,” the electronic conveyance of important information will be lost in translation, according to Digital Container Shipping Association (DCSA) CEO Thomas Bagge.

Bagge said during a World Economic Forum webinar Monday that DCSA’s nine members — CMA CGM, Evergreen Marine, Hapag-Lloyd, HMM, Maersk, MSC, ONE, Yang Ming and ZIM — had six different definitions for what constitutes a vessel’s arrival in port.

“That’s hugely problematic....

On Tuesday the nonprofit specifically tackled ship-related information transparency with the publication of standards for the exchange of operational vessel schedules (OVS). • 2M partners Maersk and MSC began loading their inducement Asia-North Europe loop service in China this week, as bookings and freight rates stay steady on the route.
  • However, there is no change to the 2M strategy of suspending its AE2/Swan loop until October, suggesting that demand over the peak season remains weak.

The service, which deploys five vessels with an average capacity of 5,300 teu and has a rotation of Antwerp-Rotterdam-Bremerhaven-Liverpool-New York-Savannah-Port Everglades-Savannah, was originally suspended until mid-June and to mid-July.

Dutch Safety Board (OVV) investigations, carried out with input from Germany’s BSU and the Panamanian registry reported the storm conditions were not particularly severe, but that the northwesterly winds that were blowing on the day of the incident in January 2019, meant that the waves were steep...
