US carloads bounce back while import gains fuel intermodal

U.S. carload volume on a weekly basis is almost at the same level as a year ago, with last week’s volumes down by only 1.4%, according to data from the Association of American Railroads.

U.S. carload traffic totaled 244,986 carloads for the week ending Saturday, which is 1.4% lower than the same period in 2019 and 18.8% higher sequentially. Sequential totals reflect volumes over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Meanwhile, weekly U.S. intermodal volumes rose 10.5% to 297,217 intermodal units.

Carload volume deficit narrows as retail sales climb

U.S. carload traffic narrowed its year-over-year deficit last week, with carloads down only 3.1% compared with the same period in 2019, according to the Association of American Railroads.

U.S. carload volumes totaled 232,146 for the week ending Saturday, a 3.1% decline from the same period in 2019 but a 1.7% increase sequentially.

U.S. intermodal traffic was also higher year-over-year, up 12.9% to 295,316 intermodal containers and trailers. On a sequential basis, intermodal volumes were up 0.5%.

Spot rates hold steady as retailers anticipate consumers shopping early for Xmas

As China’s Golden Week national holiday comes to an end, container shipping spot rates on the main east-west trades have remained flat.
According to today’s Shanghai Containerised Freight Index (SCFI), spot rates on the Shanghai-North Europe trade fell a marginal $19 to $1,149 per teu.

September was the fourth-best month for U.S. intermodal traffic in the history of the U.S. railroads, the Association of American Railroads (AAR) said Wednesday.

The U.S. freight railroads originated 1.4 million intermodal containers and trailers in September, a 7.1% increase from September 2019.

U.S. weekly intermodal volumes were nearly 2% higher last week, ending a months-long slump where traffic was lower compared with year-ago levels.

Systemic declines for coal plus a sluggish energy market contributed to an almost 18% decline in U.S. carloads in July, according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR).
