OPEC+ throws tanker shipping a curveball, shaking confidence

“In classic Murphy’s Law fashion, shipping seems prone to misfortune,” lamented Stifel analyst Ben Nolan in the wake of Sunday’s surprise OPEC+ production cuts. “Things could not have been going more right for the tanker market” until OPEC+ gave tanker owners and investors a “poke in the eye.”

“OPEC+ blindsided oil and tanker markets,” said ship brokerage BRS.

OPEC+ countries, led by Saudi Arabia, agreed to cut production by 1.6 million barrels per day (b/d) starting in May. Analysts say actual...

Shipping stocks take another beating, sinking by double digits

shipping shares

Monday was a rough day all around on Wall Street but particularly painful for owners of ocean shipping stocks, which fell much more sharply than the broader market. Concerns over China’s economy, oil demand, Fed tightening and inflation added up to one of the worst trading sessions of the year for shipping names. From tankers to dry bulk to containers, double-digit plunges were widespread.

Even so, ocean shipping stocks — generally micro-cap equities traded by retail investors — are still...

Shipping stocks in crosshairs as fears mount on China, war, inflation

shipping stocks

Shipping stocks fell sharply on Monday as Wall Street’s main indexes closed higher. Multiple shipping names sank by double digits, adding to last week’s pullback.

U.S.-listed shipowner shares face simultaneous sentiment pressures on multiple fronts.

The longer China’s COVID lockdowns last and the further they spread, the more concern there is on China’s economy, its demand for tanker and dry bulk import cargoes, and its ability to export containerized cargoes. Russia-Ukraine war fallout is...

Commodity shipping stocks are trouncing Dow transport average

shipping stocks stock shares

The Dow Jones Transportation Average has slumped 11% since late March on fears of waning domestic demand. Container shipping stocks have been dragged down along with domestic transports.

Not so with commodity shipping stocks, which have very different drivers. Tanker, gas carrier and dry bulk shipping equities are heading up.

Shipping stock charts were awash in double-digit green numbers on Thursday, a day when the main indexes were in the red.

Tsakos Energy Navigation (NYSE: TNP) and Teekay...

Tanker shares jump as war rages; other shipping shares mixed

containers shipping tankers dry bulk stocks

One of the axioms of shipping is that war can boost freight rates and share prices, particularly for tankers.

Since Russia invaded Ukraine last week, tanker shares have indeed outperformed, but upside is not evenly spread and gains have eased.

Container and dry bulk stocks have been largely treading water, with multiple names underperforming the S&P 500, particularly on the dry bulk side.

As liner stocks keep rising, other shipping shares are stalling

shipping stocks

Mid-2020 to mid-2021 was a great stretch for ocean shipping stocks: Container and dry bulk shares rose by double and triple digits and even shares of embattled tanker owners posted gains.

That changed last fall. Shares of most container-ship leasing companies, crude tanker owners, product tanker owners and dry bulk owners are down since September.

But shares of container liner companies are proving to be the exception. They’ve recouped most of their autumn pullbacks and are gaining more ground...

Shipping on Wall Street: Is it better to be a pure play or jack of all trades?

Should a public shipping company be a pure play — owning just tankers, containers, bulkers or gas carriers — or should it do as the traditional private family shipowners do, and own a mixed fleet?

The answer is important: It affects how attractive a shipping stock is to investors, and in the case of extreme rate troughs, it affects the chances a public company can avoid restructuring or insolvency.

Shipping’s pure-play-versus-mixed-fleet debate has been ongoing for more than a decade, and in...

COVID-era shipping stocks: The (super) good, the bad and the ugly

shipping stocks

Shipping stocks have never been for the faint of heart, and they’ve been on a particularly wild ride in the COVID era.

There have been steep plunges and historic surges along the way, with unexpected twists and turns. What could be around the corner?

U.S.-listed equities in the three main segments — tankers, containers and dry bulk — are following different patterns. To put these shipping stock moves in context, from the onset of COVID until today, American Shipper spoke in depth with Evercore...
