Regional Rail acquires another North Carolina asset

Regional Rail has acquired the assets of Clinton Terminal Railroad in North Carolina.

The acquisition, announced this week, will expand Regional Rail’s presence in North Carolina. Regional Rail had acquired Carolina Coastal Railway in 2020. Carolina Coastal will be the new owner and operator of Clinton Terminal Railroad, which will be named the Clinton Branch of the railway. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Zipline adds to US drone delivery footprint with North Carolina expansion

Less than a week after securing a Part 135 air carrier certification from the Federal Aviation Administration, drone delivery firm Zipline is putting its new credentials to work.

The Bay Area-based company on Tuesday announced its commercial expansion into North Carolina, where it began delivering medical products such as prescriptions and personal protective equipment last week. To start, deliveries are servicing a 7,800 square mile area out of Zipline’s distribution hub in Kannapolis.

North Carolina awards nearly $11 million to freight rail projects

The North Carolina Department of Transportation has awarded approximately $10.9 million in matching grants to the North Carolina Ports Authority and 13 short line railroads through the agency’s freight rail and rail crossing improvement program.

Fourteen projects received grants that will help fund upgrades to more than 12 miles of railroad track and 35 bridges in the state. Including the railroads’ investments, funding toward the projects is estimated at more than $21.7 million.
